  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Of course, pagans see no problem here.
Along with Christians who might not agree with the phrase being used in that heckling way at a political rally.

How was it used in vain?
For the political purpose of disrupting an event.

I dont really see that as "in vain" anymore tho. Religious sentiments are meant for partisan reinforcement. Thats their purpose nowadays.

Now, now-- under Reformed Theology, politics is very much intertwined with religious-life.

Yes, it was a violation of the 11th Commandment.

How were you able to determine that it was used that way?

Sure. But I see politics taking the lead in many peoples lives. Politics leads faith, and faith goes where politics demands - even right into a pit of lies.

I don't disagree with you; personally, I'm rather glad that I cannot vote in this election.

Mainly in the way people assent to lies.

Proper faith should hold truth above politics. Instead, many of faith have elected to walk into a bizarre "funhouse" of mirrors and illusions, because politics asked it of them. But thats my outsiders perspective.

Okay, but how did you determine that particular person used it that way?

Well its disruptive on the face of it, shouting stuff when someone else is speaking. But maybe the person had a tic that just makes them shout it. Could be, I suppose.

Ok , I'll play . Show me how declaring faith in Christ in the midst of a crowd cheering the murder of babies is profane or in vain. I am all eyes and ears please enlighten me,

How was it used in vain?
Because showboating like this isn't done for the sake of the audience; it's done to stroke the ego of the person doing the showboating. The same is true of most street preaching, most drive-by tract distribution, and many other evangelistic tactics popular with fundamentalists that encourage the evangelist to be loud, boastful, and/or intrusive for a moment without requiring any sort of follow up or discipleship.

This person is "declaring faith in Christ" and trying to convert people as much as Jill Stein is trying to win the presidency - i.e. they're not. They're just making a scene.

The issue is testable. Try going to one of her rallies and start shouting "Krishna is Lord" at random and see what happens.
I wonder if Harris even knows who Krishna is.

Given her mother is Indian, its probably fair to assume she has some knowledge of Hinduism.

More pearl clutching by people who already made their minds up in this election.

Someone clearly not going to vote for Harris goes to her rally, is disruptive and gets called out for it. Oh noes!
Nah it should just be a message to to Christians; this ain't that kinda rally, this ain't that kind of administration. Which is difficult for some Christians to hear straight from the horse's mouth, even thought they probably knew it already.

My guess is that the Christians at that rally to support Harris will disagree with your assessment.

Not to nitpick, but: I thought the whole point of rallies were to persuade those who are 'clearly not' going to vote for you?
That's actually a myth. the reason is to show potential funders/backers/donaters that they are popular enough to be worth donating to for future indulgences when they get into power. This is why Mr Trump is so focussed on 'numbers' (aside from the obvious).

I'd say probably more like argue against it than disagree with it. At least not deep down. Not in their heart of hearts.
