  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Halloween. What are your thoughts?

Do you believe that Halloween should be celebrated be believers? What do you do on that night? Just a question for everyone. This topic comes around every year but it’s good to see each other’s perspectives.

My perspective is that there’s nothing wrong with the day, according to the Bible there’s nothing wrong eating candy/anything even if it’s pagan (1 Corinthians 8:4-8) and one day isn’t more special or evil than another Romans 14:5. Besides Halloween has Christian origins if you look up All Saints' Day or All Hallows' Day. Today it isn’t a Christian day anymore because Christians became scared of the day instead of being a light. Just my opinion.

John 1:5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

My church will be open for prayer on All Hallows' Eve. I plan to go and light a candle and pray for those whom I love who have died, thanking God for their lives and commending them to God's care. Then I'll come home and hand out candy to trick-or-treaters.

The candy and costumes and pumpkins part of the day is harmless fun. It's good to have a day of fun with friends and neighbors.

But I also think it's useful to have a day when we acknowledge that death exists, when we stare it in the face. All Hallows' Eve is one of those days for me.

Participation in Halloween customs may seem innocent fun for children and adults, but it is one more way Satan can use to deceive people into thinking there is no harm in playing a little bit with the world of spirits and demons.

In the education of children, it is important that we do not plant false ideas in their minds. The Bible says, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6, NKJV). To teach them that there is no harm in imitating evil spirits is contrary to God’s will.

I agree with Eleos in post #4 above

Samhain/Halloween in America today was brought in by the (Druids) Celtic migrants from Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Cornwall, Isle of Mann

The tradition is 100% of pagan origin, and it's reaching out into the spiritual world of the dead, sacrifices and bonfires to the celtic gods were made, some declare it as the witches new year (Wicca)

It's my opinion this pagan festival has no place in the church, just as Easter and Christmas are also of pagan origin in fertility rites with bunnies and eggs (Easter), and the rebirth of the sun on Dec 21 in the winter solstice (Christmas)

Jesus Is The Lord

The Pagan Christmas Tree Was Spoken Of By Jeremiah The Prophet Long Ago, With Its Adornements Representing The Planetary System Above, With Astrology Being One Of The Oldest Forms Of Divination

(Learn Not The Way Of The Heathen)

Jeremiah 10:1-4KJV
1 Hear ye the word which the Lord speaketh unto you, O house of Israel:
2 Thus saith the Lord, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.
3 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.
4 They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.

Isaiah 47:12-14KJV
12 Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be thou mayest prevail.
13 Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee.
14 Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: there shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it.

I might go out for a walk while people are out there, so I might say hi to someone I know. My beard and clothes are enough of a costume . . . all year long.

Ones say we need to have something for our children so they do not feel like others are getting something that they aren't. But I would say children need to grow up not comparing themselves with others, about things that don't matter, like candy and costumes.

As an European, I do not see much fun in it. Fun should be effortless, spontaneous... not an "obligatory" day with a lot of costume and decoration work. For adults, it seems actually as a lot of nuisance, namely if somebody will be constantly knocking on your door, when you do not want to participate or when you need to go through streets on that day or if you are simply an introvert.

Regarding the harmlessness of the candy... eh, children are mostly healthy enough to not to die quickly from it, it will cause problems after they will reach 40's or so. But even children have health problems today, commonly, caused by the sugar addiction.

Regarding the morbidity of the costumes etc, I agree it seems rather repulsive than fun to me.

But I have never experienced Halloween, so its all just hypothetical for me.

I love Halloween It is a big deal in our neighborhood And lots of fun.
AS for celebrating it, I do not allow others to choose which holidays I celebrate nor do I let others tell me how to celebrate. I choose on my own And I choose yes to Halloween.
