  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So punish the poor because some people disagree with the abortion issue?
Did I mention the poor?

Do the poor not have any personal responsibility?

Are you aware that 58% of those choosing abortion are not poor - but well above the poverty level?

How about contraception? It's free in poor area's - how about prophylactics'? How about keeping your pants on?

So what would be better, ensuring equal weights and measures, or just giving money to these poor people?
Not the same part of government or the budgets of such, but if you don't have equal weights and measures, crooked gas stations will try to sell them 117 oz. "gallons" of gasoline.

You don't think the Republican habit of cutting support to the worse off is punishment?
For this to make sense, you’ll have to argue that only the poor support abortion. Remember, you said “because some people disagree with the abortion issue”

Because we should be giving hand ups and not hand outs.
That's not my point. Fair measurements and aid to the poor are completely separate questions. It is not a matter of picking one or the other. Both, or neither are also choices.

From the left leaning link you provided:

QUOTE: Less than two months after signing massive tax cuts that largely benefit those at the top of the economic ladder, President Trump has put forward a 2019 budget that cuts basic assistance that millions of families struggling to get by need to help pay the rent, put food on the table, and get health care. The cuts would affect a broad range of low- and moderate-income people, including parents, children, seniors, and people with disabilities. Taken together, the cuts are far deeper than any ever enacted and would deepen poverty and hardship and swell the ranks of the uninsured.
Debunked - by the IRS:

IRS data proves Trump tax cuts benefited middle, working-class Americans most

Income data published by the IRS clearly show that on average all income brackets benefited substantially from the Republicans' tax reform law, with the biggest beneficiaries being working and middle-income filers, not the top 1 percent, as so many Democrats have argued.

My post was in direct response to the idea that we should support abortion because the poor are being treated unfairly. So my point was that it’s better to deal with the bad actors who are treating the poor so unfairly that they think they need to slaughter their children in order to get by rather than just giving them money.

The "weights and measures' came out of nowhere and I responded to that. Do you think I want to get tied up in your framing about "slaughter" and "giving them money"?

The Heartland Institute is a right wing rag. They were in favour of the overthrow of the government after the 2020 election. It has has long questioned the links between tobacco smoking, second hand smoke, and lung cancer and the social costs imposed by smokers. One of Heartland's first campaigns was to oppose tobacco regulation. According to the Los Angeles Times, Heartland's advocacy for the tobacco industry is one of the two things Heartland is most widely known for. They should be in jail not publishing lies.

Great source you got there, lol.

As the data notes, Americans with incomes between $50,000 and $100,000 saw a substantial decline in their tax liability:

  • Americans with adjusted gross income (AGI) between $50,000 and $74,999 saw a 15.2 percent reduction in average tax liabilities between 2017 and 2019.
  • Americans with AGI of between $75,000 and $99,999 saw a 15.6 percent reduction in average federal tax liability between 2017 and 2019.
Middle-class Americans in key states were delivered significant tax cuts:

  • Floridians with AGI between $50,000 and $74,999 saw a 19.6% reduction. Floridians with AGI between $75,000 and $99,999 saw a 17.2% reduction.
  • New Yorkers with AGI between $50,000 and $74,999 saw a 18.9% reduction. New Yorkers with AGI between $75,000 and $99,999 saw a 12.4% reduction.
  • Californians with AGI between $50,000 and $74,999 saw a 18.4% reduction. Californians with AGI between $75,000 and $99,999 saw a 14% reduction.

Despite CBO’s Predictions, Trump Tax Cuts Were a Boon for America’s Economy and Working Families

The truth is, the Trump tax cuts resulted in economic growth that was a full percentage point above CBO’s forecast, and federal revenues far outpaced the agency’s predictions. In fact, under Trump tax policies in 2022, tax revenues reached a record high of nearly $5 trillion, and revenues averaged $205 billion above CBO predictions for the four years following implementation of the law.

Beyond what the Trump tax cuts did for economic growth and federal revenues, it provided major benefits to working families. The officially reported poverty level fell to its lowest rate in 50 years and unemployment rates for minorities and those without a college degree hit all-time lows. Real median household income rose by $5,000, and wages went up by nearly 5 percent. Americans earning under $100,000 saw an average tax cut of 16 percent. And while the tax burden on low-income families went down, the top one percent saw their share of federal taxes go up.

How about the House budget office?

Written by the Republican chair:
House Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington (R-TX) along with Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith (R-MO) issued the following statement

Measuring the impact as a percentage decrease in total tax liability can be a bit misleading, as people in lower income brackets tend to pay less in taxes as an absolute amount (meaning that a large percentage decrease in tax liability may not equate to any appreciable increase in take-home pay). To repost an example I used previously:
While that data does show that people making less than $50,000 received the largest percentage tax reduction that year relative to 2017, the real dollar value of those reductions was mostly pretty small. For example, people making $10,000-$15,000 saw their average taxes drop by 72%. Which is great - but the real dollar value of that "massive" drop was $85/taxpayer on average (~$7/month). In contrast, people making $500,000-$1,000,000 saw their taxes drop by a paltry 9% - which worked out to around $15,000/taxpayer (~$1250/month). Now, if you consider those numbers as a percentage of the taxpayer's total income, the picture changes a bit. The person making $15,000/year regains 0.6% of their income per year, while the person making $1,000,000 regains 1.5%. Seems to me that the person making a million per year is getting the better deal.
