Green hats

I've noticed that recently our avatars have been given green hats with a yellow band and a red feather. Does anybody know why this is? Is it to celebrate some special day or season?

Ah, thanks! I remembered the hats from last year, but couldn't think of a holiday. (Labor Day, nope. Rosh Hashanah, nope, and that's in October this year anyway. Hmm...)

There are a large number of Americans of German descent, and plenty of them like Beer.

We don't celebrate it that much either, UNLESS it's when Beer is offered.
