It's hard to tell how many non-citizens may have been allowed to vote in past presidential elections, perhaps not enough to have made a difference. But this demonstrates that there are problems that need to be fixed.

these are not non-citizens. They are people who registered before the State required verification. There's no reason to think they are non-citizens. They've taken an oath that they are. The State was supposed to verify people who had registered before the requirement, but a paperwork error caused them not to be checked. The law specifies processes for dealing with unverified voters, which requires giving them notice so they can supply verification. There isn't time to do that before the election. The State Supreme Court said that the law doesn't allow them to be dropped without following the process.

The voters already were entitled to cast ballots in federal races, including for president and Congress, regardless of how the court ruled.
