  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I haven’t lit one at my church in a long time but I think the suggested donation is $5. Or at least thats what my friend just told me she thinks it is. I don’t know where I got $10 from.
5 dollars sound more reasonable and if they are the large candles that burn 2 weeks & well, it is worth it imo. And these are not just any candle but made from bee’s wax. Not something you find at Walmart, etc.

In Texas it’s interesting. We have votive candles in most stores like supermarkets, Walgreens, Walmart, etc

I’ll have to check and see if they are beeswax

They are not blessed because blessed candles cannot be bought, and if you would buy a blessed candle it immediately loses its blessing when paid for.
Giving alms is not the same as buying the candle

In parishes they have recommended donations but there is no cashier taking your money so you can light a candle

Simony is frowned upon in God’s Church. His house is a house of prayer, not a den of thieves

I think it suggested only $3 at my cousins church but I only had a $10 so I put that in.

Is it the bees wax that makes some Catholic Churches smell so good?

Incense would be my guess
It doesn’t smell like incense, though. My church had a good, strong smell that disappeared after they renovated it but last weekend I started smelling it again…..just a little bit.

I read the thread title and wondered who allows pets in Church in the first place. Then I read it again  ^_^
One of our past priests used to feed the magpies (birds) before mass.

Trouble was the magpies used to wander in during the mass to see what was going on and hopefully score another hand-out.

When I was a child growing up in Camden, NSW, my family attended the Anglican Cathedral of St John, which has a pipe organ in the loft at the back, large grounds and an adjoining cemetary. It is huge. One Sunday on our way in, we came across a kitten under a large tree on the grounds and petted it briefly, but my parents hurried us along into the Church. During the service, the kitten came into the Church and found its way past several rows of pews and over 100 parishoners to curl up at my sister's feet, and that is how we ended up with our first pet.

Oh! That would be annoying!

What's the hang-up with hard wooden pews? What would be wrong with some comfortable chairs?
So it's easier to kneel would be my guess? Also, I think it goes back to the Middle Ages so one can sit, kneel, and stand during Mass.

Maybe it's easier to clean up the pews if someone poops in their pants or bleeds.
Yeah the Lutheran church I used to go to has soft, fabric covered chairs that were getting nasty the last I saw.

I don't think Lutherans kneel that much expect to receive Communion? Same with Anglicans and Episcopalians.

You have the experience, so you would know.

Many years ago, I didn't offer a donation. Oops.

There was no kneeling there at all. Not even during Communion. Maybe it depends on the church.
