  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Pope in multi-faith Singapore says ‘all religions are a path to God’

SINGAPORE – In a line that may once again stir reaction in more traditional Catholic quarters, Pope Francis on Friday wrapped up a three-day visit to Singapore, a country with large pockets of at least five different faiths, that “all religions are a path to God.”

“They are like different languages in order to arrive at God, but God is God for all,” the pope said, who had set aside his prepared text and spoke largely off the cuff. “Since God is God for all, then we are all children of God.”

The pontiff made his remarks during a interreligious meeting with young people held at a Catholic junior college, just prior to departing Singapore for his return flight to Rome.

Such rhetoric has stirred controversy in the path among more conservative Catholics who fear that it calls into question Catholic doctrine on Christ as the lone savior of the world and also undercuts missionary efforts to bring people to the faith.

That is syncretism, a heresy and demonic teaching. One can only approach God through His Son, Jesus. No one else.

John 14:6 (NIV): "Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

This is the kind of thing that led me to leave the Church of England. Please don't let the Catholic Church go the same way, I don't really want to go Orthodox.
It will happen over our dead bodies. Or rather better to say it that it will not happen if we put our bodies on the line. Jesus is LORD.

It’s the ramblings of a poorly catechized old man and not Church teaching. I know it looks like a replay of the Anglican slide. Prayer and fasting will get us through.

This could be the sign of the End Times. Churches are starting to become more worldly.

It could. When the Son of Man returns will He find any faithful? Might only be a remnant. How do we get to be part of that and not abandon our faith?

By ignoring what the Pope says, and following Christ and the Bible. Christ > Any human figure. I am a Catholic, but I do not put much weight into the Pope or authority besides Christ. I believe in Eucharistic miracles, and how the Catholic church documents miracles better than the Protestants, but the Protestants are right about a few things, such as not having a Pope in control. If our Pope becomes woke, we will have to leave him. Just go to Mass every Sunday, consume the Eucharist and go home. If the teachings of the Pope somehow make it into the church, then find a different Catholic church. In the worst case scenario, priests may have to operate independent "underground" Catholic churches that are separated from the Pope's authority.

Yes, but authority is necessary. The pope’s particular ramblings have no authority but his office does have authority. There’s the knife edge. A rambling pope still has authority, just like Peter who on one occasion was told “Get behind me, Satan.” Don’t dump papal authority but distinguish it from a Francis ramble.

The days of Peter are sadly over. Our 21st century Pope cares more about publicity compared to Peter. What if the Pope's office starts to become corrupt this decade, or any time in the future? Should we still listen to his office in 2030, 2040, 2050...?

The gates of hell shall not prevail as Jesus said. We have had worse popes throughout history. None of the infallible teachings of the Church have been changed. None.

If that happens, we will all have cause for alarm.

It’s the office holder that is the problem and not the office. What if the next pope is no better? It is the office holder then and not the office. We have had some really bad popes in the past and have survived. Keep the office and pray for the offic holder.

We can pray for our leaders. What if our next pope is the Antichrist? What then? Should we defend the office then? Where is the line drawn?

There are many antichrists in the world. I doubt things will play out like the Left Behind books. Even if a pope turned out to be an antichrist does that mean we should leave the infallible teachings of the Church?

We can trust in the older Catholic Church or the 2011 Catechism if the future pope puts out a corrupt newer version of the Catechism. But hey, let us not speculate on the End Times. The Antichrist could be a leader of Israel in the future, which seems the most likely.
