  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Violent crime has increased under the Harris-Biden administration, according to data from the Department of Justice published Friday — belying ABC News debate moderator David Muir’s correction of Donald Trump during his showdown with Kamala Harris Tuesday night.

The annual National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) showed total instances of reported violent crime — including rape, robbery and aggravated assault — is up from 5.6 per 1,000 in 2020 to 8.7 per 1,000 in 2023.

The highest recent rate of violent crime was in 2022, when the survey tracked 9.8 instances per 1,000 people over the age of 12.

The rate of rape increased from 1.2 per 1,000 in 2020 to 1.7 in 2023, while robbery went from 1.6 per 1,000 in 2020 to 2.6 per 1,000 in 2023, and aggravated assault rose from 2.9 per 1,000 in 2020 to 4.5 per 1,000 in 2023.

I could be wrong, but I truly doubt that the liberals will believe those numbers.
I can understand reluctance to trust the current administration.

The National Crime Victimisation Survey (NCVS) interviews a number of people each year and asks them whether they have been a victim of crime and whether they reported it to the police. Some haven't reported it (just over 50% this year: NCVS Dashboard), so it's obvious that the figures that they get will be a lot higher than figures that you get from police data.

It's also obvious that the people who reported a theft or an assault deemed it not worth the effort to report it. Whether that was a lack of trust in the law, the judicial system or that it really wasn't important enough to report is debateable. But if you got into a scuffle with a guy in a bar late one night then you might well mark that down as an assault. Or if someone stole a pot plant out of your front garden then it could well be included as theft. But I think it's safe to say that any criminal activity that is serious enough to be reported is serious enough to be considered on a year to year basis as a comparison to see what the trend is.

That said, the trends (using the dates in the OP) from the NCVS are all pretty flat but will go up or down depending on which dates you choose. For example, if we take the numbers per 1,000 for 2018 and 2023 we have these:
Rape: 2.7 dropping to 1.7
Assault: 14.6 dropping to 13.0
Overall rate of violent crime: 23.2 dropping to 22.5

You can see the charts here: NCVS Dashboard

How accurate are the NCVS figures? Let's look at 2022 in the chart for robbery. The figure is 2.5/1000. If only half are reported to the police (see earlier linked chart) then the police figure should be 1.25/1000. But from here...

...we can see it's 0.6/1000. Less than half. So one set of figures is definitely wrong. I doubt if it's the police figures. So personally I wouldn't use the NCVS to check trends. But I guess that depends on which way you'd prefer the numbers go...

I'm not blaming the Biden-Harris administration. It seems people are just becoming more violent. It's sickening :(

Violent Crime Dropped in 2023 Despite Trump Saying Crime 'Through the Roof'

Despite former President Donald Trump recently stating that crime is "through the roof," violent crime dropped in 2023, according to FBI statistics released on Monday. Overall, violent crime declined an estimated 3 percent in 2023 compared to 2022, the FBI report said, signaling a continued downward trend after the spike that occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition, homicides and non-negligent manslaughter dropped by nearly 12 percent.
Monday's report comes after violent crime surged in the early years of the pandemic, with homicides jumping nearly 30 percent in 2020, marking the largest single-year increase since the FBI began tracking these statistics. Experts have cited a range of factors behind this rise, from economic stress to disruptions caused by the pandemic and escalating gun violence.

Violent Crime Dropped
What do we have in today's news?

NYC council member calls for more cops in his Bronx district to deal with rising violent crime: ‘Left behind’

The Bronx is being “left behind” as shootings soar across the borough – and one councilman is calling for more cops to clean up violent crime in the Boogie Down.

City Council member Oswald Feliz (D) made a plea for help in a letter to interim police Commissioner Thomas Donlon after three police precincts in his district reported double-digit increases in shooting incidents.

If there are more crimes in one place, does that mean there are more crimes in all places?

Nearly one-third of local law enforcement agencies are missing from the FBI's crimes statistics.

We're not looking at total crimes per se. We're looking at trends. Even if you are correct, then that is waaaay more than enough to make a decision as to whether crime is increasing or decreasing.

What year is it?

Does all violent crime result in murder?

Is all violent crime a result of a shooting?

Is being shot dead more desirable than being beaten to death?

I'm not sure where we are going with this.

What year is it?
it's 2024. The latest annual crime rate is way down. We won't have the current year until January. That's how annual rates work.

However...

New FBI statistics show continued drop in US crime in first six months of 2024

Violent crime dropped in 2023 — despite Trump insisting it was ‘through the roof’

‘Our crime rate is going up, while crime statistics all over the world are going down,’ Trump has previously said

He can't help himself.

Does all violent crime result in murder?

Not all shootings result in murder, no. Murder, being a violent crime is down with the rest of it.

Is being shot dead more desirable than being beaten to death?

Just more common. But as you see, violent crime was down markedly last year and is down for the first part of this year. It's not all good news, though...

  • The red state murder rate was 33% higher than the blue state murder rate in both 2021 and 2022.
  • 2022 was the 23rd consecutive year that murder plagued Trump-voting states at far higher levels than Biden-voting states.
  • 8 out of the 10 states with the highest murder rates in 2022 voted for Donald Trump in both 2016 and 2020.
  • From 2000 to 2022, the average red state murder rate was 24% higher than the average blue state murder rate.
  • Red states like Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama are America’s murder capitals and have had the highest three murder rates for 15 of the last 23 years.
  • Even after removing the county with the largest city from red states, and not from blue states, red state murder rates were still 20% higher in 2021 and 16% higher in 2022.

One likely contributing factor...

A Newsy analysis found that of the estimated 11 million unauthorized immigrants in the United States, 57% were living in blue states, defined as places with Democratic governors, plus Washington, D.C.

Fewer undocumented immigrants, 43%, were in red states with Republican governors. Even when accounting for population size, there are still higher per capita rates of undocumented immigrants in blue states, not red states.

As you probably know, illegal immigrants are less violent and more law-abiding while they are in the U.S. than are native-born Americans.

I like how they're using data from the height of COVID when everything was shut down and people were quarantining and ALL crime was at it's lowest because people just weren't out and about. At the same time over 350,000 people died that year because of the utter incompetence and intentional spread of disinformation, misinformation, outright lies and conspiracy theories by the Trump administration.

Just curious, were the numbers quoted in the OP written in Sharpie?

In previous threads about the reported crime rate from FBI and other government agencies, it has been shown that up to about 15% of various sizes of cities ain't reporting and giving their actual crime data to the government agencies.
