  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I often stop by Church when doing errands to write in the prayer book offered at Mass, light some candles and have some quiet time.

One of my peeves is the lighters never seem to work! Ugh! I’m going to start carrying a lighter.

I lifted a small candle out of its votive to light mine. I about burned myself and I do not like handling someone else’s candle.

Bug, bug, bugs me!!

Also when people talk in the sanctuary before or after Mass. Ugh. Drives me bonkers.
Yeah that’s the thing. They talk before and nobody really visits after! Lol!

I could never get the matches to work when I was an altar boy. I almost always burned myself.

Great thread. My parish uses sticks to light candles. Take a small stick, place it in the flame of a candle, when the stick catches fire use it to light your candle. It is usually long enough so you won’t get burned. To extinguish the stick, we have a small jar of sand. Works really well and does not take away from the piety of the candle burning devotion.

Speak with the pastor about your concerns with candles

The talkers are a distraction and they need a cease and desist order. I wanted the parish to play one of my favorite hymns during that quiet time before Mass but so far the idea has not been received. The hymn is:

1 Let all mortal flesh keep silence,
and with fear and trembling stand;
ponder nothing earthly minded,
for, with blessing in His hand,
Christ our God to earth descendeth,
our full homage to demand.

2 King of kings, yet born of Mary,
as of old on earth He stood,
Lord of lords, in human vesture,
in the body and the blood.
He will give to all the faithful
His own self for heav'nly food.

3 Rank on rank the host of heaven
spreads its vanguard on the way,
as the Light of light descendeth
from the realms of endless day,
that the pow'rs of hell may vanish
as the darkness clears away.

4 At His feet the six-winged seraph,
cherubim with sleepless eye,
veil their faces to the Presence,
as with ceaseless voice they cry,
“Alleluia, alleluia,
alleluia, Lord Most High!”

I’d like to light more candles but I think they were $10 last time I did. Maybe $5.

I usually go to Mass with my older friend. She likes to talk at Mass but can’t hear well plus she has tinnitus. Whenever I try to answer her she can’t hear me. I usually just wave my hand and whisper never mind. But lately I’ve found myself getting louder and have probably become a peeve for the people around us.

Shoot. Even the 2 week ones are only 2 or 3 here.
Wow! I haven’t lit one in a long time but I’m going to my cousin’s funeral next week and will probably light one at her funeral. I don’t know how much they cost at her church but it’s a special occasion.

Usually my church parking lot is like a race get out. Sometimes people are in such a hurry they won’t even let me in so I can get out. And I purposely park in a spot where it should be easy to get out.

I haven’t lit one at my church in a long time but I think the suggested donation is $5. Or at least thats what my friend just told me she thinks it is. I don’t know where I got $10 from.
