I've wondered about this my whole life! And I just can't say for sure. A commentator I read a very long time ago said it was the Church in the appearance of Eve, the Mother of God's People. Others have said it is Israel because of the 12 stars, representing the 12 tribes of Israel, or the 12 apostles of Christ. But I just don't know.

I've tended towards seeing the Woman as Israel because the history here describes Israel more than the Church. It certainly isn't Mary! Mary was never held up so high as the Catholic Church has! Nothing in the Bible exalts Mary to such a high place except that she was viewed as "blessed" for having given birth to the Christ.

In Dan 7 and 12 we read of the 3.5 years in association with Israel at the end of time. So I think this history in Rev 12 speaks of the endtimes when Antichrist will rule for 3.5 years. The "flood" Satan will spew after her will likely be an army. The earth swallowing it up simply means that the Flood fails, the Army dissipates.

Israel's children were Christ and all Christians, via Christ. And so, the Church can learn from Israel's endtime plight, and respond appropriately. We should defend Israel and resist the Antichrist.

A women in the Bible, especially in bible prophecy like Revelation represents a church. Eph 23:32 2 Cor 11:2

The women clothed in the sun (means clothed in righteousness) represents God’s true Church.

There is another women in Revelations the harlot, which represent that apostate church. She is called the Mother of Harlots which means she has daughters. So one main false church that her daughters came from.

Revelation is very symbolic but the Bible interprets itself and will define through scripture what everything means.

The Church of God - from OT to NT - one entity.
As Jesus said in John 4 "salvation is of the Jews" because it is from the Jewish nation that the Messiah comes.
He does not say "salvation is of Mary"

Yes Jesus ascended to heaven.

But in the Bible a pure church is a pure woman.

Church faced tribulation for 1260 prophetic days (times (24 months - 720 days) time (12 months - 360 days ), 1/2 time (6 months is 180 days) -- so then 1260 days total -- in day for year prophetic time ... which is then 1260 years of dark ages persecution also seen in Dan 7, Rev 11, Rev 13.

Repeatedly predicting a 1260 period of persecution of the church.

flood - is a symbol for war, armies sent to destroy the church in that dark ages of persecution

The woman (the church) fled into the the wilderness - the Earth put a separation between the woman and the armies sent after her.

Protestants in Europe fled across the ocean to the Americas and the armies sent against the church were significantly hampered by that geographic barrier in their efforts to war against the church

The woman in revelation 12 is Israel.

That is true - and it is also the Rom 2 "Jews" - the church of Christ. Rom 11 that both OT saints and NT saints are united as Christ's church.

And it also recalls the prophetic narratives about God's marriage to Israel, etc.

The " woman" is Israel or Jerusalem where our Lord Jesus Christ of Nazareth came from. The 12 stars are the 12 tribes of Israel. She was carried off into the " wilderness ". She appears again in chapter 17 but now as the scarlet woman. She is apostate Isreal.

The woman can be identified by her children.

Revelation 12:5 And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.

Revelation 12:17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

So, the woman's children are Jesus and those who "keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ". That's a description of the church, which is the Israel of God (Gal 6:15-16). The church is made up of Jesus Christ as its cornerstone and its members are Jew and Gentile believers and it's built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets (Ephesians 2:19-22).

So, this is about Israel and Zionism (1890). 12 tribes and Israel are the stars and the women. When she comes out of the wilderness it's 1890. Subtract the 1260 and do the year day principle.
The Jews were sacrificing on the temple mount right up until the Muslim period. It's an exact match.
