  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hello folks. We know how well my opening ceremony thread went (it crashed and burned). I actually enjoyed the Olympics, and was cheering for Simone Biles as well as whole host of other athletes (though, I thankfully never watched the Opening or Closing ceremonies). Now, there are three days until the Paralympic games, so I am excited. However, the regular Olympics closing ceremony was disturbing to me. I will not judge you if you guys were okay with it. For myself, it seemed a little dark, and borderline, if not full-blown idolatry of false gods.

First off, some science. Back in the summer of 1977, NASA launched the two Voyager spacecraft, which were used to explore the outer solar system. Onboard each spacecraft was installed a golden record, a time capsule storing hundreds of images and hours of songs on an LP record made out of gold-plated metal (those circular things that look like giant CDs, for those who never grew up with records). These records are a time capsule in case aliens come across the probes in thousands of years, so that ET could learn about the basics of human culture. Also wait, 1977 is already almost 50 years ago? I remember when those probes were only 33-35 years old back in 2010-2012. Man, I am getting older bro.

During the closing ceremony, a figure named the Golden Voyager dressed in fake gold descended from the stadium's ceiling, representing the Voyager probes. "Thomas designed the artistic character to represent the Voyager Golden Record, or the record of humanity sent to space by France in 1977, per the Associated Press, and it kept audiences very entertained during a section of the ceremony that paid homage to the history of France and the Olympics itself." - NBC / E!

Some Christians likened the closing ceremony to be demonic, with a headless fallen angel (or Greek god) named Nike taking center stage. For myself, I think it was a little disturbing and borderline dark (though not as bad as the opening ceremony), and should not be televised to children, cos this stuff is nightmare fuel. According to one X user, she said "The Olympics Closing Ceremony features a headless, and armless Angel with what appears to be an effigy of Lucifer (The Golden Voyager) standing in gold." - Times Now

France doesn't care about God.

If it's demonic, I wouldn't be surprised.

They have abandoned their holy Mother.

Yep, France totally abandoned Jesus, well, there is some good news about the Notre Dame repairs at least. Other than that, it does seem like France needs Jesus again. Prayers for France, that the French return to Christianity.

Amen to the cross being installed on the Notre Dame. :) At one point in time, the French were far more Christian, but then the French Revolution tried to shut Christianity down. Just like the French are trying to force the hijab ban. This is horrible, in a land that is supposedly free going such as France. Same thing happened in 2024 with the Olympic Committee telling a surfer to remove Christ the Redeemer off of his surfboard.

Notre Dame is incredibly beautiful. Been there in person when Vespers (evening prayer) was being prayed and incense was offered.

Heavenly

Ahh man, I went there when I was 5 (November 2004), so I barely remember it. Looks like I need to go there again in the future and go to an actual service there. Catholic churches need more incense in the US in my opinion, or at least have a service that has incense once a month.

wat?
Are people completely losing their sense of history and art?

It's the statue of Nike. It's like... famous. It has nothing to do with Christianity. CHRISTIANS DIDN'T EXIST WHEN IT WAS SCULPTED.
Get over yourselves. The world doesn't revolve around Christians and what offends them.

I do agree with you on that. It is the statue of Nike from circa 200 BC, but it does look disturbing (but hey, from the Wiki, apparently, the head fell off due to the statue's age, and was never to be found). Christianity was not founded until ~230 years later in 33 AD or so. So yes, a lot of Christians get their stuff in a tizzy it seems. An age warning displayed in the corner of the screen, or delaying the transmission of the closing ceremony to later at night could be a compromise to satisfy everyone.

Also, I do admire Greek architecture, and would love to go to the Parthenon in the future, and I did have a slight fascination with the Antikythera mechanism when I was younger as well, a mechanical computer that is nearly 2000 years old.

Haha, that is a good one. The head fell off. The statue of Nike would have looked like this if the head was still attached. Someone's got to build a new head for Nike, even just to appease museum goers. :) I like ancient history, even though I am not good with ancient history.
