  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Too many family members in the Trump campaign. He needs someone to keep him on message, instead of complaining about what Kamala/ Biden/ the media are doing/ not doing.

It WAS his election to lose.

Yes, I thought that too. The Mail article cited says that Trump is 'lying low in Mar-a-Lago' while Harris is on the stump.

He is next due to speak to a rally in N. Carolina next Wednesday, giving Harris and Walz a full week of campaigning to themselves.

but he did what he said he was going to do.
Like - 'Lock her up!' and 'Build that wall!' and 'Cut taxes for the super-rich!'.

One out three is a fail for most people.

I never liked Trump's personality but he did what he said he was going to do. I'm sure he isn't the only Billionaire who expects everything to go his way.
He claimed that he was going to build a wall that Mexico would pay for. Didn't happen. He claimed he would repeal the ACA and replace it with something better that operated on free market principles. Didn't happen. He claimed that he would upgrade American infrastructure through raising over $500B dollars from private investors. Didn't happen. He said he would get rid of gun free zones in schools and on military bases. Didn't happen. Oh, my personal favorite. He said he was going to institute a lifetime ban on White House officials lobbying for foriegn governments. He actually did it, and then before he left office he repealed it. Those are just 5 high profile examples of things he said he was going to do and didn;t.

Do you suppose that Trump is capable of learning from his mistakes? Do you suppose that any of his handlers can keep him from going off the rails?

When he ran in 2016, I remember a clip of him in Pennsylvania; he told the crowd that he was going to bring (Penn State football coach) Joe Paterno back- only problem was Paterno was dead. I truly thought he blew it, after that.
I would have to give credit to Kellyanne Conway for keeping him on message enough to win that election. Had she not managed Trump, she would be hailed as an historic "first"woman, too.

Now, I believe Don Jr is in charge, and is cheerleading Dad to be his braggadocios self. Donald Trump, like many high profile people, only have a very few individuals who can get his attention.

Everything you mentioned, was fought tooth and nail, by both Democrats and many Republicans (Romney, Paul Ryan, McCain, to name a few) as well as 90 percent of the media.

The wall was opposed by Democrats because he wanted Congress to fund it, not Mexico. He never came up with a plan to replace the ACA. All he did was attempt to repeal it with nothing to replace it and then complained about healthcare being difficult. He never presented an infrastructure plan even though he promoted "Infrastructure Week" several times. I don't recall anything about the gun-free school zone act, but removing those same restrictions on base would have just been a matter of executive order. And the last thing I mentioned he did do, and then once it was clear he wasn't going to be in office next term, repealed it. Both by executive order. So for most of the things I mentioned, he made a big promise, and then never actually created a plan to implement it.

And, to be fair, he had an agreement with the democrats where he would have gotten $25 billion to build his wall, my recollection is in exchange there would be protections passed for the Dreamers -- something he claimed to support. He got back and apparently some of the more anti-immigrant members of his staff convinced him to refuse the deal. Trump could have had the money for his wall.

Yes, he did. Look at his forays into foreign affairs. He annoyed your European allies with that idiotic 'America first' slogan and in spite of his bragging about making deals he got nothing from his trip to Korea. Kim ran rings round him.

(I was interested to learn that 'The Art of the Deal' was ghost-written by a proper writer - Tony Schwartz.)

Although Trump wasn't in politics at the time; most political books are written by ghost writers. Some politicians even save classified documents in their garage for their ghost writers...

Call me naive!

He never gives credit to Schwartz.
Trump cited it as one of his proudest accomplishments and his second-favorite book after the Bible.[5][6] Schwartz called writing the book his "greatest regret in life, without question," and both he and the book's publisher, Howard Kaminsky, alleged that Trump had played no role in the actual writing of the book. Trump has personally given conflicting accounts on the question of authorship. Wikipedia

Actually, Trump used them to brag to unauthorized persons who were visitors to his golf course.

Trump then returns to the Iran document, according to the audio recording and indictment transcript.

“I was just thinking, because we were talking about it. And you know, he said, ‘He wanted to attack Iran, and what…,’ ” Trump says.

“These are the papers,” Trump continues, according to the audio file.

“This was done by the military and given to me,” Trump continues, before noting that the document remained classified.

“See as president I could have declassified it,” Trump says. “Now I can’t, you know, but this is still a secret.”

“Now we have a problem,” his staffer responds.

“Isn’t that interesting,” Trump says.
...
Trump: “Hey, bring some, uh, bring some Cokes in please.”

Yes, he did. Look at his forays into foreign affairs. He annoyed your European allies with that idiotic 'America first' slogan
The phrase has an interesting provenance:
How did “America First” become appropriated to have a racist connotation?

When Mussolini took power in November 1922, the word “fascism” entered the American political conversation. People were trying to understand what this new thing “fascism” was. Around the same time, between 1915 and the mid 1920s, the Second Klan was on the rise.

Across the country, people explained the Klan, “America First” and fascism in terms of each other. If they were trying to explain what Mussolini was up to, they would say, “It's basically ‘America First,’ but in Italy.”

The Klan instantly declared “America First” one of its most prominent slogans. They would march with [it on] banners, they would carry it in parades, they ran advertisements saying they were the only “America First” society. They even claimed to hold the copyright. (That wasn’t true.)

By the 1930s, “America First” stopped being a presidential slogan, and it began to be claimed by extremist, far-right groups and who were self-styled American Fascist groups, like the German American Bund and the Klan. When the America First Committee was formed in 1940, it became a magnet that attracted all of these far-right groups that had already affiliated themselves with the idea.

So it's not surprising that Europeans might have a negative response to it.

So, The President of the United States, should not put Americans first.
Wow, who knew?

Well, going to a NATO conference and repeating the slogan there was a crass mistake. He was widely seen as betraying the alliance.

'America first' is an expression of self-interest, a legitimate concern for every nation. Trump either ignored or was unaware of the hard fact that your country's legitimate self-interest has been served by alliances across the world - NATO, OAS, ANZUS, for example, along with a wide range of bilateral defence arrangements.

It's just that "America First" was a fascist slogan, taken up by the American Nazi party and the KKK.
