  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The laid-back, unencumbered, older shooter from Turkey who scored silver in the Olympics has inspired hundreds of memes, particularly in the IT community, where he is the hero of "simpler is better." He was defeated only by someone with the latest high-tech resources...but he had defeated all the others who had high-tech devices.

Being Turkish, he naturally likes cats, and some wags are (truthfully) saying that if something happens to his cat, we'll get a 4 movie franchise a la John Wick.

Also, like with Luke Skywalker, there is another (inasmuch as it was a team silver): Though she does at least have a bit more gear with a hat and ear protection.

This is funny. All the other folks use tech to aim, while this guy did not. :) What a talented man.

I wonder how much of that is necessity, or just a overly-cautious rule...

They're using air pistols and not real pistols for that, correct? (admittedly, I'm not familiar with the exact model they're using there...but the general feedback I'm reading is that the sound level would be comparable to a suppressed .22lr, which could be comfortably fired without ear protection)

So maybe it's also a case where they where them just to block out any potential noise distractions from the crowd, etc?

Fired repeatedly?

I wont be upset if it turns out The Olympics® has a blanket hearing protection rule for all shooting sports. People underrate hearing protection and its good to see competitors using it, especially when they look like the cool assassin we all want to be. If they extend the rule to archery, then that would be weird.

These folks don't appear to be using any hearing protection (at least not that I can spot in the video)

And the audience that's sitting feet behind them aren't wearing any hearing protection either (whereas they would definitely need to if there was a real gun being fired less than 20 feet away from them)

Yes, these athletes are using air pistols. I know nothing about pistols though, except the path of the projectile follows roughly the shape of a parabola. :)

I noticed that article before:

None of the air rifles generated peak levels that exceeded the 140 dB peak limit for adults and 8 (80%) exceeded the 120 dB peak SPL limit for youth. In general, for both adults and youth there is minimal auditory risk when shooting less than 100 unprotected shots with pellet air rifles.

Conclusion

To minimize auditory risk, youth should utilize air rifles with an integrated suppressor and lower velocity ratings. Air rifle shooters are advised to wear hearing protection whenever engaging in shooting activities in order to gain self-efficacy and model appropriate hearing health behaviors necessary for recreational firearm use.

So it sounds like the some of the advice is geared toward "it's a good habit to be in if you ever switch to real firearms" sort of thing.

Those are way over safe levels.

As a drummer Im glad I started wearing hearing protection early on. A snare drum or open hi hat in front of your head is not healthy when repeated for minutes - or hours.

I wish I had worn hearing protection to all the concerts I went to and left the baffle in my exhaust pipe.

Yes, it was air pistol, and yes, he was still wearing ear plugs. Hearing damage is cumulative. When we're talking about people who shoot thousands upon thousands of rounds, even that adds up.

Here's a video on the subject from someone who shoots the same discipline:

In short, Dikec shoots using a more classical style (~20 degree off-axis, rather than squared off at 90 degrees); his lack of eye devices (eye blank, iris) is just indicative of him having strong eye dominance and good eyesight. All of these things are about reducing tension in the body so that the shooter is as relaxed as possible.

You have seen this article also? But yes, wearing ear protection, even if the air rifles did not exceed limits, is a good habit.

Good idea to wear hearing protection as you drum. :) And yes, 130 dB is way over safe levels, even for a second.
