  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Paris Olympics 2024: Food becoming an issue for athletes in Olympic village

Paris Olympic officials attempted to offer more plant-based foods in an effort to reduce the Games' carbon footprint. While there is a variety of cuisine available to accommodate the tastes of different countries — and an abundance of baguettes in France — vegan meals aren't in line with what the athletes prefer to eat while competing.

One British athlete told the Times that the food situation is chaotic compared to the well organized facilities in Tokyo.

The Village provides approximately 40,000 meals a day with 3,300 seats available in the facility's main restaurant. Some countries can't get meals anywhere else but the Village, while Great Britain's athletes are housed in a part of the village near the River Seine that has a separate restaurant and performance lounge.

Shouldn't the Olympics offer athletes freedom to choose what they eat, as long as it is not drugged up with performance enhancers? If one wants to reduce carbon footprint, ban the private jets that multimillionaires fly to the Olympics with, or ban politicians from using private jets. I already reduce my carbon footprint by setting the A/C to only kick in at 77 degrees during the day, using an LED backlit 43 inch LG screen, and using LED smart lights. My energy usage is 150-300 kWh per month, cos my dehumidifier runs for a few hours per day.

God bless 77 degree Fahrenheit rooms. Ahh, my favorite temperature during the day to run my A/C. :) My parents for the longest time had the temperature at our old house at 78 degrees (cos it was a big house that used a lot of electricity), so that is why I was used to this temperature. Now that my parents have a smaller house, the temperature inside their house is closer to 75 degrees when I see them. My workplace is 72 degrees and is chilly in my opinion. Can not stand that temp, so I wear long sleeves. What a waste of electricity also. 74 degrees would be much better.

I'm not necessarily surprised. I think plant based foods are probably cheaper and easier to obtain.
I doubt it cheaper. Since paid more money for plant based hamburger type meat. The sad thing about healthy foods. It cost more. Even when you buy grass fed meat. It cost more. Organic is more expensive than non organic.

I'd have thought hosts wouldn't DARE to mess with the diets of athletes. I had thought our Canadian team has brought their own chefs/cooks before but that may not be true....

It shouldn't surprise us given The Paris Agreement. Trump pulled us out and Biden reinstated us. You may want to review it before the games begin. It might explain a few peculiarities.

There is absolutely no doubt at all The Paris Agreement is one of the primary reasons for those, and probably others, peculiarities there at these Olympics.

Most likely. If France really wants to be eco-friendly without taking away freedoms, there are better ways of doing it, such as composting, using LED lights, using less plastic, reusing materials, buying second hand, donating to tree planting organizations to plant fruit trees in Africa, and driving Japanese cars. Yes, most of my shirts are second hand, the ones that I have gotten since the early 2020s.

Also, I am planning on keeping my Samsung Galaxy A54 phone for > 6 years until 2030+ (by setting the charge limit to 80%, and shutting the phone off at night to reduce battery degradation). My co-worker has an iPhone 7 from 2016 that is still going strong in 2024. But no one is gonna mess with my food supply.

Here are some of the strategies that are much more feasible to take care of the world, without taking away personal freedoms. The ones that are in bold are things that I have done myself. Notice how none of my strategies include messing with my food supply. I rarely eat beef and pork, cos chicken is my preference (and takes less time to make), so I already cut down on meat emissions. Chicken has one of the lowest emissions per serving when it comes to meats. Yes, I eat chocolate, so my emissions go up, but let a man enjoy his German chocolate.

Just checked my June electric bill. 400 kWh of electricity used. That is a lot, but most of that energy usage comes from my Energy Star certified dehumidifier. My dad says I can not shut the dehumidifier off, as my condo is almost hermetically sealed and suffers from humidity issues.

From Stewardship Devotional:

Christian Tips for EnvironmentIn the context of our modern world, these verses call us to be good stewards of the Earth and apply biblical principles to mitigate environmental degradation. Here are some ways we can apply these verses to our lives in 2024:

1. Cultivate a mindset of care and respect for the Earth as God's creation, acknowledging our responsibility to tend to it.
2. Reduce our carbon footprint by using renewable energy sources such as wind and solar and adopting ecological practices in daily life (ex. composting, using energy efficient LED bulbs, riding a bike to the store, driving small fuel-efficient Japanese hybrids/crossovers).
3. Support and advocate for environmentally sustainable policies, including reducing plastic use, promoting recycling, investing in public transport & mixed-use urban developments, and minimizing waste.
4. Practice conservation by preserving natural resources and protecting habitats for various species.
5. Educate ourselves and others about the importance of caring for the Earth as a moral imperative, rather than just an environmental concern.
6. Pray for God's guidance in our efforts to be good stewards of the Earth and ask for His help in overcoming challenges related to caring for creation.

They can’t get decent food in Paris?
The irony is real, my brother. Paris is like the food capital of the world, and yet these athletes might be limited to vegan stuff. How come the average Parisians can get to decide on their own meals in the comfort of their own homes, but athletes in the Olympic Village can not? Somewhat unfair, if you ask me.

Was there ever an Olympics where accommodations were halfway decent?
I recall a dorm once having its roof access curtailed because athletes were going up there for funny business and not picking up their used condoms.
