  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The Spectrum, can we abide with each other?

I guess I am somewhere between liberal and Conservative. Might as well say Progressive.

The charismatic renewal is misplaced in this spectrum. So is St. Athanasius.
Where would you put those two? I am not familiar with everything Catholic (new Catholic since 2022).

The charismatics I would put in a range from ever so left of center to traditionalist, with the bulk of them being squarely conservative. Of course a few outliers. The radical traditionalists might not like the charismatics but they are substantially middle to conservative.

St. Athanasius was a courageous resistance fighter against the arch-heretic Arius. Conservatives and traditionalists claim him as much as the radical traditionalists would.

Seems that the spectrum is biased itself then. In other words, people can not be confined to a box.

The spectrum is not terrible. It just has a few flaws. And yes, people do not always fit in nice boxes. Or spectra.

There is one "spectrum" that matters, that from self-obsessed pagan to self-sacrificial saint. Teresa of Avila saw this in 7 steps, or Mansions. John of the Cross, in 4; Bernard of Clairvaux, in 4. Crucially important is to be on the trajectory, in process, seeking to advance and not stagnate nor regress.

I love me some infographics.

No idea where I fall anymore though. I think I can draw from all three categories on the right side of the spectrum: I work for EWTN, I go to a novus ordo, and assuming RNC=Republican National Committee then yeah that's how I'm registered. But I also prefer the Baltimore and Roman Catechisms and would go to a TLM/FSSP parish if I could (although I absolutely love my parish for so many reasons, it does pretty much everything so well)... Just like everything else in life I feel like a mutt.

Glad to hear I’m not the only ones that describes themselves as a mutt. Although I do think a lot of converts feel that way. I hope you are having a wonderful Father’s Day.

A mutt is just fine. 'Cause I'm one too. Born that way though.

I think you describe a scale of spiritual development. The other scales are more theology or intellectual opinion.

I feel this passage comes into play with a "spectrum" type situation (at least religiously):

So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I’m about to spit you out of my mouth. Revelation 3:16
