  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Oh my! A visitor from New Zealand is killed by Californians! And now they are saying it is no act of terror!
Explain how this is a terror attack against tourists.

I doubt they look at it through the political lens you’re trying to apply here. It’s not LA, it’s not California, it’s Americans who are seen as violent and dangerous around the world. The city of Los Angeles didn’t commit this crime, nor did the state of California, three individuals did this on their own and they’ve now been thankfully apprehended.

Ugh. Just another unhinged thread from a hateful person driven crazy by their myopic and deranged politics. But it happened in California, so it's fine to try to capitalize on it so that you can feel morally superior to people in a place you do not live!

You don't see us Californians starting threads on random crimes that happen wherever you live, Rockytopva. (And if you happen to live California, go ahead and move. You won't be missed. We don't need more mini-Ted Nugents whining endlessly about the fact that we exist, as though that's an actual crime just because you've overdosed on Fox News. That's entirely on you and what you choose to stew in.)

I guarantee this ladies husband is in a sure state of terror. Sheer state of terror... Hmmm... And adding California at that!
Terrorism is a specific crime. You can’t just call any violent crime terrorism because it generates fear.

I would be afraid to recommend anyone travel to California! Not only for their personal safety but for the outrageous inflation.
That‘s fair. Too crowded anyway.

California is without a doubt one of the most beautiful places on earth. I highly recommend people come visit and see for themselves instead of relying on the Fox News dystopian fantasy that it’s all a violent hell hole. Visit Yosemite, Big Sur or any of our beautiful beaches and you will not be disappointed. Sequoia is my favorite place in this state. It as close to heaven on earth as I have found. Here’s some pics I took from a recent visit there.

I must say at least you are proud of California. We don't get this stuff on the news.

Armstrong Woods (Sonoma County; this is where I grew up), as captured on California State Parks' website:

This is our Sonoma County version of Sequoia National Park, I suppose, with its own impressive costal redwoods, waterfalls, etc. It is a beautiful, serene place to hike, walk, take tourists from other places, or just be in some of the most impressive nature you'll find anywhere in the entire country (I'm tempted to say "the entire planet", but I haven't been everywhere like I more-or-less have within the USA). The final photo showcases the part of the grove that is a popular site for weddings (just in case anyone is wondering why there are benches in the middle of the woods).

The news can focus on whatever it wants to. This is one of many examples of why I love this state, and particularly the part of it that I grew up in. It is a true blessing.

(Edit: It seems that two of four images may not be displaying properly; please go to the state parks website to see them.)

Would this even be a thread if the OP didn’t have the day off?

There's arguably nothing more American than celebrating your country by hating a large part of it based on stereotypes you have about the people who live there and what they do and why they do it. :D

There is a point where evil acts against humanity need to be called out as terrorism. And this is one of them.
Why? Why should this specific botched robbery be called terrorism? What political or ideological aim did this act attempt to achieve? Somebody lost their lives and that's a tragedy, but just because it happened in a state you don't like doesn't make it terrorism.

What sets this apart from other similar crimes?

Was it terrorism? Yes! And in the words of the mayor...

"To hell with these guys,” Mayor Will O'Neil of Newport Beach said. “They came into our city, knowing that they were going to commit crime, and a woman is dead today because of it.”

You asserting it was terrorism doesn't make it so. How does this act meet any definition of terrorism?

And in the words of the mayor...

"To hell with these guys,” Mayor Will O'Neil of Newport Beach said. “They came into our city, knowing that they were going to commit crime, and a woman is dead today because of it.”
I agree with the sentiment, but once again, this is a tragedy and not terorism.

That means this botched robbery/murder is equal to 9/11.
