Call me wacky, but here's a thought: why not join the rest of advanced Western Nations and take the guns out of the hands of civilians!

You will be safer, look at the data.
The huge issue there is that it is a case of putting the djinn back in the bottle or belling the cat. Except in this case if one is 95% successful the result is guns only in the hands of those you least want to have them.

Also to do it legally it would require a constitutional amendment. If the government instead runs roughshod over the constitution then the people have reason to fear and distrust the government.

I agree that this is indeed a legitimate point. However, I think it is the only argument from the gun rights side that has any merit whatsoever.

Ok

How is this an argument? Constitutional amendments are legitimate democratic actions aren't they? The 19th amendment to the constitution gave women the right to vote - was this "government running roughshod over the Constitution"?

Of course not.

The right to a gun is an outdated relic that should be done away with in a modern society (subject, of course, to solving the "putting the djinn back in the bottle" argument that you have wisely raised).

A constitutional amendment is fine by me. In the current political environment the chance of any constructional amendment passing is slim to none. A controversial one has even less chance than that.

I should have point out the near impossibility of that legitimate path working.

There once was a good guy with a gun
His duty to mankind ne’er would he shun
Strong wind did he break
And his six-shooter spake
And now his big toe count is one
Work it into a two stanza haiku?
