And many parents would prefer to be allowed to make those decisions for their own children, instead of having those decisions made for them by a group of busybodies who are more concerned about their own moralistic agenda than anything else.

But, who cares about those parents, right? They're not the "right" kind of parents.

-- A2SG, they should just do what they're told, like everyone else.....
It’s always important to read as much as you can and be as informed as much as you can.

I wish I had more time for reading! It’s fun! Even nonfiction!

The parents are free to purchase the books themselves. What decision was made for them?

Well done. It's just a shame that some people now want to stop what you did. And I can't think of another book that deals so much with censorship than 1984.

“To Kill a Mockingbird,” by Harper Lee is one of the top ten most challenged and banned books of 2020. The same book, along with “1984” by George Orwell, “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” by Mark Twain, and “The Catcher in the Rye” by J. D. Salinger, are among the 100 most banned and challenged books of the past decade (2010-2019), according to the American Library Association.' Are These the Most Banned Books in Public Schools and Libraries in the US?
“To Kill A Mockingbird” is very, very good and it’s a shame it was ever considered controversial.

I even did a book report for “The Catcher in the Rye” when I was a freshman in high school, which was ***gulp*** nearly 14 years ago.

The decision about what books are available in the school library for their children to consider reading. Kids spend more time in school than in bookstores, so it's a good place to find new stuff to read.

-- A2SG, and cheaper, which is a consideration if the budget is tight, which it can be for some....

I don't know - I have yet to read it - but the article claims that it references the other books that were deemed inappropriate - (and I don't know how they were referenced exactly) - so it would not be outside of reason to ban it too.

It would be like if the Bible were banned - then a book that often quoted from the Bible was introduced to the library - it would not be unreasonable to ban that book too.

Either way - none of the books that were banned from the schools prevent any of the parents from buying those books and having their children read them if they were so inclined.

This reminds me of people who got upset because there were no prayers in schools - it's like - no one is stopping you from praying at home.
Please understand, I’ve read the Bible cover to cover as a Christian, and I can understand why some might consider it “controversial.”

(Read it and form your own opinion.)

I’ve only read two pages of The Book of Mormon because I found it an incredibly difficult read.

I told you it didn't. It's a novel: https://www.amazon.com.au/Ban-this-...7211387c8d2a06d0a6d2010&qid=1718254928&sr=8-1

'It all started the day Amy Anne Ollinger tried to check out her favourite book in the whole world, From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, from the school library. That's when Mrs. Jones, the librarian, told her the bad news: her favourite book was banned! All because a classmate's mum thought the book wasn't appropriate for kids to read.

Amy Anne decides to fight back by starting a secret banned-books library out of her locker. The battle of the books escalates when she engineers a campaign to challenge every book in the school library. Because once you ban one book, you can challenge them all under the most ridiculous of pretexts: The Lorax portrays the timber industry in a negative light! The mouse in the room in Goodnight Moon is a health code violation! And let's not even start on the safety concerns raised by The Magic Treehouse.

Soon, Amy Anne and her friends find themselves on the front line of an unexpected battle over book banning, censorship, and who has the right to decide what they can and can't read.'

Do you think children shouldn't read a book that deals with censorship?

Children spend more time at home - and have more free time to read there - and if they are strapped for cash they could always go to their local public library.

The thing about having controversial books at the school library is that parents are not there to approve what is being read.

Whereas - if they bought the book themselves or checked it out from the local library - then they would be able to approve each book.

I would have thought that you'd want to restrict children from reading about genocide, murder, incest, rape, torture etc.

I can understand why the Bible or Book of Mormon would not be considered appropriate for a public-school library.

I don't feel the need to try and force those books to be included in those spaces.

Why did you find the Book of Mormon difficult to read?

I found it difficult because of the language. It was very Elizabethan.

And it came to pass…and it came to pass…and it came to pass…and it came to pass…and it came to pass

Very repetitive

The article claimed that this book "talks about the books that they have banned".

Parents ultimately have the right to decide what their children can and can't read.

Parents aren't around 24/7. What you might find some of them do is instruct their kids on what they can and cannot do. It's what we call trust. A parent saying that a book should be removed from the school library is admitting that they have no control over their children. That they don't trust their children.

Personally speaking, and this is just my opinion, it doesn't reflect well on the relationship that parent has with their kids.

And censoring children from reading about censorship? My irony meter had a meltdown.

You’re definitely right.

For reference:

My sister in law would be traumatized if she knew my nieces or nephews ate an extra piece of bread or had ice cream at night.

But you cannot control everything.

(I don’t have children so I really can’t weigh in on their upbringing).
