CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I thought he was convicted also.
We both read the title wrong. How can convicts run for office? America (both the far-right and far-left) is falling apart. Any sign of patriotism that I have had in the 2000s is completely gone. Plus, patriotism is a form of idolatry, putting country above God. Can not wait until July 11th.

Great question. However, I'm not completely against it on principle alone. I can imagine a scenario where someone who was convicted of a crime learns their lesson or whatever and has something of value to offer as a representative of his community. Maybe there would need to be a "cooling off period" and maybe the type of crime they were convicted for might matter, but I wouldn't blanket ban a convict from running for office.
I somewhat agree with this except for the motivations. "putting country above God" is a meaningless phrase to me, but I agree that rabid patriotism is off-putting. I don't see the point in having student pledge allegiance to the country every morning at school or singing the national anthem at sporting events and flying an American flag on non-government buildings and things like that. Seems a little weird.

Yeah, a cooling off period would work, but it would have to be sufficiently long (maybe 5-10 years after jail term ends). Hey, at least we both agree that patriotism is off-putting, even if we both have different reasons but arrive at the same conclusion. Hey, a Christian and an athiest agree. We are both brothers, bro.
July 11th is when Trump gets sentenced.
