  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Conspicuous Omission in the New DDF Document on Private Revelation

How often have we heard, concerning supernatural phenomena: “The faithful are not obliged to give an assent of faith to them,” or concerning a private revelation: “Its use is not obligatory”?

Such language, taken from the recent document “Listening to the Spirit Who Works in the Faithful People of God” released by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, May 17, 2024, is no doubt familiar.

While I am no dissenter from the authoritative teaching of the Church, and I accept the DDF document as magisterial, I am nonetheless concerned that an important aspect of our Catholic Tradition is harmfully overlooked in it.

Is it true that all private revelations and prophecies are always merely optional? Can a private revelation ever impose a moral obligation on one or more Catholics?

Maybe this is God teaching us that we should go back to His word more. I am a Catholic, but prefer sticking to the Bible more so compared to mulling over documents.

You know that the Church is not Sola Scriptura right? Yet the RCC does nothing without Scripture. Reading the CCC is proof of that.

That is true. But here is the thing. What happens if we get a woke (I do not like using that term) Pope or Bishop in the next few decades after Pope Francis passes away or something, and the future Pope decides to push strange doctrines on us?

I have the CCC in my living room, but it is collecting dust.

We have the infallible teachings of the Church. Which is all Scripturally referenced. The CCC shows that. When we start touting things that go against those infallible teachings and the Scriptures and previous writings of Popes… well, you’re covered. :) You should be impervious to any falsity in that case. Remember, even Satan can disguise himself as an angel of light. What I’m most wary of are the things where they are edging things in the door without declaring anything as infallible. Look at what some did with FS.

I am not familiar with FS in Catholicism. I am a greenhorn, only two years into Catholicism.

It is a document that makes gay being acceptable or something? Creepy priests and stuff?

What are Fiducia Supplicans?

The Vatican declaration “Fiducia Supplicans” roiled the Catholic world in December with its ruling that priests were permitted to offer blessings to couples living in irregular situations, including those in same-sex relationships

It was sort of a murky message. It gave the impression you could bless irregular situations. The Vatican said it was allowing the blessing of each individual but some took it as a green light to bless gay unions and other irregular unions.
