Psalm 121:
5 The Lord is your keeper;
The Lord is your shade at your right hand.
6 The sun shall not strike you by day,
Nor the moon by night.
7 The Lord shall preserve you from all evil;
He shall preserve your soul.
8 The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in
From this time forth, and even forevermore.
With the exception of verse 5 above, the word tsale [H6738],
is typically translated "shadow" and often designates a place
of protection or defense, by the One who hovers over you.
This is first presented in the narrative of Sodom and Lot,
and his willingness to protect his angel visitors by offering
his own daughters.
Genesis 19:
1 And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom:
and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;
2 And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet,
and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night.
3 And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house;
and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.
4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round,
both old and young, all the people from every quarter:
5 And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night?
bring them out unto us, that we may know them.
6 And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him,
7 And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly.
8 Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you,
bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes:
only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.
Hence, Lot accepts a burden of responsibility to protect his guests from heaven.
The people of the land promised to Israel were without defense against the Lord.
Numbers 14:9 Only rebel not ye against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land;
for they are bread for us: their defence H6738 is departed from them,
and the LORD is with us: fear them not.
This is found in the vivid imagery of the Psalms:
17:8 Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow H6738 of thy wings,
36:7 How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust
under the shadow H6738 of thy wings.
57:1 Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusts in thee: yea,
in the shadow H6738 of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be over past.
63:7 Because thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow H6738 of thy wings will I rejoice.
91:1 He that dwells in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow H6738 of the Almighty.
121:5 The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade H6738 upon thy right hand.
