The cannabis legalization in Canada may provide an interesting real world understanding of what happenned to underground drug suppliers when Canada legalized.....

No....cannabis is NOOOOOOOOT fentanyl, carfentanyl or anything like that.

Sorry, I can't even find a decent piece of research or reportage on it at this point! I'll try to look more later.

I mean, once gangs are involved they are not going to disappear, but I'll tell you that their profit motive would be very different.

Pre legalization, an ounce of cannabis was 260$. If I look online, I can now find an ounce for 70$.

It's simply not as as lucrative for them.

I think that not wanting to get an X-Ray every time you go across the border is a reasonable thing to ask for, especially for people who do the trip numerous times per year. One X-Ray might be harmless, but the damage adds up.
My buddy Frank crosses the border everyday before and after work. I don't think he'd appreciate the xray very much at all.. Especially considering he's a convicted felon for smuggling immigrants across the border.

You’re joining in too it sseems. Also false.
Ad hom again. That's attacking the person , at which you are quite adept! This is a forum and not a private conversation; if you don't want others to comment, then DMs are the way.

That said, no one is forcing American citizens to buy fentanyl from the Mexican cartels or to ingest it. Buy America!

Why do folk take opioids? Seems that addiction can be a problem as well as chronic and acute pain. Still, they should buy American.

I’m saying that you are joining in on the conversation, that’s not an ad hom, because I didn’t insult you.

or don’t buy at all. And don’t enable easy access to it for people.

We could also tighten up our gun laws. The cartels are heavily armed, mostly with American-made weapons--because our gun laws make it easier here than anywhere else for illegal weapons purchases.

Why not? Properly labeled and dose-controlled, it could relieve a lot of suffering. The way it is today, people in need must buy on the street and guess/hope at what they are actually getting

Because then you normalize it and more people in general will use it, which is bad.
Why would that be bad? There are a lot of people in pain, acute and/or chronic for which Tylenol is ineffective. Yes, it is a dangerous drug which should be regulated so no one takes it inadvertently and it would probably damage the "Mexican cartels'" profit motive.

Addiction is a medical problem that criminalizing doesn't help let alone cure.

Fentanyl is an addictive drug and destroys lives. People will use it recreationally more often than they do now and get addicted.
From what I've read, fentanyl doesn't destroy lives so much as just end them. Perhaps we should provide the resources for folk to get unaddicted.

I think prison destroys more lives than recreational drug use.

I think not making it easily available is the best method to get people yo never use the drug at all. As for rehabs, I have no problem with addicts using rehabs to get better.

You’ve described the system as it now stands and we all agree that this is not working…maybe having a retail fentanyl den in the neighborhood (along with mandatory “if you want help kicking the opioid addiction” pamphlets and other services that could mitigate the situation would be a better way to go than simply locking more people away for longer would do?

Legalizing the drug will only make things worse. Marijuana is an example of legalization leading to more widespread use. Although marijuana is not as harmful as fentanyl.

When has prohibition ever worked?

Is that’s what is stopping you from using it? Social stigma?

No. I quite frankly didn’t hear about fentanyl growing up, the hard drugs I had heard of were cocaine and heroin, never tried those. Mainly because 1.) it was simply not around, and 2.) I heard those have extreme harmful effects. If fentanyl was legalized I would not try it.
Substantially reduced the abuse of the substance in question.
prohibition actually did reduce alcohol consumption quite a bit.
