One would need to own up to the deaths on his watch first:

Published May 17, 2022
While speaking in Austin, Texas, on Saturday, Trump claimed while discussing the U.S. war in Afghanistan: “When I was in charge, in 18 months, we didn’t lose one American soldier.”

“In 18 months in Afghanistan, we lost nobody,” he later emphasized after mentioning that day’s deadly shooting in Buffalo, New York, in which a white gunman killed 10 Black people in a supermarket.

That is a false statement.

AP’S ASSESSMENT: False. There is no year-and-half time frame under Trump’s presidency alone that no combat deaths among U.S. service members were reported.

Irrelevant to my point and an attempt to shift the goalposts.

Trumps.... tweet? post? whatever, is flat out disrespectful. He's just hijacking the moment to air out his own grievances.

But we all knew his presidential adventure was a vanity trip anyway. No surprise there.

Actions speak louder than words. Results are worth more than platitudes and empty gestures.

I would argue that a POTUS who tried to make peace, didn't start any new wars and who effectively mitigated the loss of US soldiers honors the fallen and living soldiers more than a POTUS who makes a show of placing flowers on the grave of a soldier that he was more likely to have caused to be put in the ground.

Your reply to the op is in the textbook example of goalposts shifting
Only if you believe that virtue signaling and putting on a show actually honors the fallen.

Look at the thread subject.
It's not difficulat to issue a statement that honors the fallen. Every President has done so except one.
And as I said - empty platitudes and virtue signaling - putting on a show - is not what I would consider honoring the fallen.

I understand that some people may believe that going to church every Christmas gives proper glory to God - but I am of the opinion is that what we do each and every day is what glorifies God.

Trump not starting new wars, trying to make peace, trying to deescalate tensions and mitigating the loss of US soldiers is actually honoring the fallen.

And now Trump is trying to expose the corruption and to preserve what all our fallen actually fought and died to protect.

On one point I will agree: Our country shoud do more to avoid involvement in wars in which we have no business....Viet Nam, Panama, Grenada, Afghanistan, Iraq etc.

In any case, Trump's screed on Memorial Day was entirely inappropriate. I should you would at least acknowledge that.

I would say whichever one had less US soldiers die while they were POTUS.
But that is changing the topic actually, or moving goalposts. There are more deaths by US soldiers when there are 2 wars going on than one. The Iraq war ended in Dec. 2011, a full three years into Obama's first term. And the war in Afghanistan was hotter in Obama's time.

The OP was asking about two specific statements made by Obama and Trump. Here is the OP"
Two former Presidents tweet out messages to America about Memorial Day.

As an outsider I've always been intrigued by how other countries celebrate their fallen soldiers. I can say in Canada, Remembrance Day is a solemn day. It is meant to show humble respect, admiration and gratitude to the soldiers who have fought for us AND the soldiers who have perished. This has been the Canadian way since....I dunno, before I was born, for sure.

On Memorial Day in the US, two US Presidents tweeted about Memorial Day.

Who do you think did a better job at honouring the legacy of the fallen soldiers from your country? Which of these two presidents cares first and foremost for their country?

Trump's screed shows his own self-centered focus and poor writing skills. He did have one complete sentence.

I understand that everyone wants to focus on platitudes and not the actions.

With a a nice tweet to begin with maybe attend a Memorial Day Service at a nearby religious institution?
Then maybe a round of golf?
You think everyone would agree with that?

I'm not a big fan of how someone can toss out the phrase "virtue signalling" in an attempt to gaslight an argument.

Especially one where the only really acceptable option, is to act virtuous (ie....to honour fallen soldiers, it makes sense to do a virtuous act).

"Not going to war" does NOT "honour" any soldier.

That is an argument of desperate convinience.

If you win were to win a prestigious award for, say, fiction writing and I, a professor were to come up to you and say "Writers are just failed academics who pretend to be smarter and more intune with others. Besides, I already spoke to the committee and they made it clear that, while your entry was better than the others, the others were simply so bad, they shouldn't have been published to begin with." Nobody in their right mind would argue that I was honouring the person who won that award.
And I would be a complete idiot for saying that you only won because all the good writer's didn't have books in the competition.
