They were advertising here for stockers at $20 an hour. That’s very good for this area.
$14 an hour for an entry level job is not bad though.

Average 1BR rent in Montgomery, AL is about $1000/mo. Coincidentally, $20/hr is exactly what you'd need to make in order to make $1000/mo "affordable" under the 30% rule. Your definition of "very good" is being able to live by yourself without being house poor.

lol, have you met any restaurant owners?

Even the good ones you have to keep an eye on.

I trust small business owners less than I trust billionaires.
My first job was in a body shop that went out of business because the owner didn’t pay his taxes

Staying home must be the only option left.

I think some may believe that accessing a food bank and not dying means you can survive on "x" as a wage.

I own a 3 bedroom 2 bathroom house and my mortgage payment is only $700. If you’re single you get a roommate if you have a partner you both work.
I don’t make an extraordinary amount of money but the cost of living is less down here than up North

I worked two jobs for 25 years and only started working just one 15 years ago, that was on salary so I still got stuck with extra hours now and then until a year ago. I’m 60 years old and I’m just now getting to work only 40 hours a week

"Cost of living" is, for the most part, another term for "cost of housing." Outside of a couple of unique places like NYC or SF, most non-housing expenses don't go up all that much in "HCOL" areas.

Am I correct in assuming that your mortgage doesn't include property taxes and was acquired before interest rates went up a few years ago? We got ours in 2015 (refinanced a few years ago); original purchase price was around $270k; original mortgage was around $220k. Mortgage payment and property taxes are each right about $800/mo. Interest rate is 2-point-something.

We were able to swing that on two incomes of around $50k each.

That works out great for us now that our incomes have more than doubled, but a new homebuyer couldn't do that right now. I don't know what home prices have been like in Montgomery, but my house is now worth at least 50% more than when I bought it, maybe as much as 75% more, and interest rates are triple what mine are.

It wasn't a quote. I did not use quotation marks.
What I posted is the essence of what you posted.
Then you essentially mischaracterized what I said.

Yes interest rates are now where I am avoiding buying another house. My house is worth considerably more than it was when my wife bought it.
My stepdaughter bought a nice home in Wetumpka, she is a special needs coordinator at a college and her husband is a history teacher. They think nothing of buying another house and moving.
I’m a supervisor over security at a large hospital and my wife is a teacher.
Editl your property taxes are outrageous

I'm sorry you had to struggle like that. But just because you did, doesn't mean everyone should.

I’m not sorry, I did well, I just had to work for it.
My first wife was a stockbroker and I tried to match what she made until it got to the point that it just wasn’t possible anymore.
When I was a police officer I routinely worked over 80 hours a week and when I went to the Sheriff’s Department they didn’t have the overtime so I had a pressure washing business. When I went to the Drug Task Force I sold my business at a good profit and I was a Youth Pastor as well. Then head of security at a hospital on salary for 14 years.(Driving 2 and 1/2 hours a day the last 6 years)
40 hours a week seems like nothing now. Gives me plenty of time to workout and enjoy life.

Tell me then why you would make an entire career out of a low paying job serving people in a restaurant. Say you started when you were a teen. Why are you still in this low paying job in your 50:s?
None of your business and off topic for this thread.

Honestly that is what this opinion piece advocates. No retirement. Not no mandatory retirement, which I'm OK with. No retirement at all.

Here is my proposal for their official theme song!

Donovan Leitch is the best! He is the Shaman!

I'm very sorry you think that. There are MANY MANY individuals who do not have the skills to do other work and are trapped doing that job.

Regardless, who CARES if it's not life long? Because it's not a lifelong job, you think people doing that job deserve to live in destitution while thye are performing that job?

Besides, as bad as wages are for some:

She’s a single mother who can’t pay her rent WITH FOUR CHILDREN. Do you see the problem here? Okay, she made a mistake, not once, but FOUR TIMES.
Why do you think I only had one child?

You presume to know what her situation was when she had those kids.
