Pope approves blessings for same-sex couples if they don't resemble marriage

You have no authority concerning what is set up in a Catholic church.
But I have a great deal in common with the guys who took the statue and threw it into the Tiber River. ;) I have a suspicion that they and I would probably get along just famously.

On Tuesday morning, Damian Steidl Jack, 44, and his husband, Jason Steidl Jack, 38, stood before Father Martin in a living room on Manhattan’s West Side. The couple, running a bit late because of subway delays, dressed casually. Damian, a floral designer, complimented Father Martin on the pine smell of the Christmas tree.

In keeping with the Vatican’s admonition that such a blessing should not be performed with “any clothing, gestures, or words that are proper to a wedding,” Father Martin wore no robes, and read from no text. There is no blessing for same-sex couples in the thick book of blessings published by the U.S. Conference of Bishops. Instead he selected a favorite of his own from the Old Testament.
“May the Lord bless and keep you,” Father Martin began, touching the two men’s shoulders. They bowed their heads slightly, and held hands.

“May the Lord make his face shine upon you, and be gracious to you. May the Lord turn his countenance to you and give you joy and peace.

“And may almighty God bless you,” he said, making the sign of the cross, “the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

And then, with emotion evident on their faces, the three men hugged….

I think there is a whole industry based on creating controversy around the pope. People sowing division based on misinformation to put money in their pockets and a sort of personal pride that wants to usurp the pope's authority. The so-called liberals and the so-called rad-trads appear to be two sides of the same coin in this respect, at least to me. But there are folks in both camps who mean well but are simply in error.

I think we have a pope who is much more in the public eye than previous popes. Perhaps this trend of the "famous pope" really started with JP2. There are pros and cons to that. Francis's teachings are being misconstrued, but at the same time people are paying attention.
Pope Francis’ issue is that he wants to speak pastorally instead of doctrinally. The issue here is that if your audience doesn’t know that is the case or doesn’t know the difference it creates confusion.

Doctrinal statements are usually clear cut. Right/wrong, black/white. Pastoral language is shades of grey, with more than one right answer and more than one wrong answer, depending upon the person you are trying to pastor and their specific situation.

The last two prior to Francis, JPII and BXVI, were both theologians, and normally spoke doctrinally; this pope does not speak doctrinally but pastorally, and in my opinion this is where he gets himself in trouble and creates that confusion.

That's fair. I really do not find him confusing. Every time one of these stories comes out I think to myself "that sounds suspicious" and then go and read what the pope actually said or wrote, and don't see anything about it that gives me pause. I actually think Francis is quite orthodox, even though his communication style is different.

Has there been confusion? Certainly. But people can take anything and sow confusion from it. People have taken the Bible itself and twisted it to justify slavery, racism, and other bad things. If people do that with the word of God there is nothing to prevent them from doing the same with the words of the pope, if they desire. So to me, the existence of confusion itself is not a sign that the pope has taught something wrong. A lot of folks focus on the hysteria but cannot actually point to a specific statement that the pope said that is incorrect.

I would respect Pope Francis more if the blessings had been singular. He totally lost me when he said "union". He's not fooling anyone with this sly attempt to inch his way toward acceptance of sin without repentance. He already showed his true colors with Pachamama.

And don't forget about footnote 351. When will he respond to the dubia?!

I agree that is at least part of his intention. I see multiple agendas - none of them good.

I get it. There is more that could be said, but I, too, work to be careful and sensitive in what I say.

It's emanating from Pope Francis, what do you expect?

It all adds up to the casual observer exactly like those so-called "religious education" classes Catholic kids got in the 1970s: "All you need to know is that God is your special buddy, and you should try to be a good person, okay? Don't worry about the rest of that stuff. Let's all make a felt banner!"
Ah, felt and feelings. I was there for those days.

I haven't read the document so I can't comment much but...OK I have to say something lol.

IcyChain is trying to give us Catholics HOPE that what has ensued doesn't mean what so many people think it means and yet most of us want him to be...WRONG? That's weird, lol.

I suspect he followed all the new rules perfectly. Here we go.

It's been approved of and happening for a few months in Belgium and in Germany. James Martin, a stickler for following the rules, was just waiting for the Vatican to provide the rules he could stay within. Somebody show me if you can how James Martin violated any single part of the new Vatican rules.
