  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why is new age so popular?

New age adopted terms like 'chakras', nirvana [reincarnation], and so much more from eastern religions.
Much more, surprisingly, than we might know or realize.

They're a blend of eastern culture, mythology and pagan wiccan.
New Age distorts many religions including Catholicism. They use the Rosary and I've even seen
some use a form of the Mass in their rituals.

Actual Buddhist and Hindu's reject what New Agers project as authentic Eastern religion.

Control issues seems to be a big thing in that genre. My sister was into it and that was my impression along with a big dose of superstition. It drove her to the mental hospital.
Oh huge...YUGE for sure. New Age is kind of the spiritual component of a larger cultural ethos that one should ignore their inhibitions and do whatever makes them feel good, regardless of the cost. It's the religious equivalent of "treat yo' self!"

How is your sister now?

She’s still not right. I really do not talk to her anymore. Mom said she is more open To God now which is a good thing.

Was she ever Catholic? I wouldn't be surprised if she needed an exorcism honestly, the way new age is connected to eastern religions, especially Hinduism, there are all kinds of demons that can be invited in.

No. She was one of those WOF people.

If I had to venture a guess, it's popular because it offers pleasure and it demands nothing of the practitioner.

My generation (Millennials) and the ones after it are progressively self-centered, beyond any normal sense of self-concern. We've reverted to primal instincts seeking pleasure at all hours of the day and avoiding suffering at all costs.

It's a product of the zeitgeist, where Christianity is centered around sacrifice (the utmost of which was Christ's, but also lays out sacrifices that his followers must make in one form or another) New Age is just self-indulging.
I think I pretty much agree. Though I also think some people are honestly searching because they have not found Christ in Christianity.
In fact, many "Christians" would like to ride Christianity of anything mystical.... And also anything really self sacrificing, for that matter.

I think there is a longing for the supernatural in humans. They are just looking in the wrong place when they go new age. Jesus is the only answer.
Yes, they are looking and looking and find some interesting and fun things. Like kids in a toy store. I am talking about the deletants. Others who are willing to make a serious commitment, well, I'll be quiet about them.

I agree with that. Christians have actively been purging the faith of Christ for years if not decades.

Christians have actively been purging the faith of Christ for years if not decades.

This is so true, and so sad.

I sometimes do reflect back on past decades, and changes we've seen in the Christian churches in general, and ask myself "Where did we go wrong? What did we do wrong?" ... and then I begin remembering many things ...

For what it is worth, there are persons of my generation ... like me ... who are "sorry" for what has happened in the churches.
I feel we were responsible for passing on the truth to next generations, and yet many of us failed in doing so.

Then, they are not Christians. Anyone can say they are a Chrisitan, but there is no Christianity or Christian without Christ.

I have a good mind where we went wrong but I won't get into that now, heh.

No argument here, all the same there are progressives out there trying to make up these feel good churches that are more social than spiritual. Like rotary clubs with crosses on their buildings.

So, right, I was talking to a young man who says he isn't doing harm because he uses holy water [goodness knows why he thinks it's holy or where he got it] while asking 'gods' to help people.

I reprimanded him.
I cannot explain how many times I have to keep repeating myself. HE needs prayers so badly.

The rubbish I hear from my 'new age' 'like a son' young man is astounding.
I get - what's the word, flustered? - I seek the Lord to help me even talk to him and I told him that it is too hard.
He spews crazy crap that must be what new age philosophy is branding of Christianity.

Whoppers include:
There are spells in the Bible.
It's ok to have gods.
Jesus is ok with it ^

And I frankly ignore most of these strange oddities he tries to tell me exist.
And I will quote scripture, teach history etc

But dealing with him is a lesson in patience. Most days when I see he has texted me... it takes hours to open it because 'not today' is how I feel.
But the Lord wants us to help others.
Sometimes it is a slow crawl til something registers.

I find that phrase interesting, too. I don't know if it's been around longer but I've only noticed it in the past few months. When I think of "manifest" my first thought is how the demonic "manifests", so it's peculiar to find it suddenly surging in the pop culture lexicon.

It’s been around for awhile. It has similarities with the WOF movement imo.

Many New Agers who practice pantheism, will point to St Francis of Assisi as worshiping nature.

Their error is that St Francis did not worship nature, but treated nature as gifts from God. He saw
God's hand in their creation as gifts to us and that inspired him to write about Brother Sun and Sister Moon.

Why is it called New Age when this stuff is reinvented ancient ritual?
Probably because they bring in multiple things from various sources which brings up
a new form of spirituality. Of course it's dangerous and even leads to Satanic worship.

A young girl I knew as a child, is now an adult woman serving a life sentence for murdering
a boyfriend and disposing of his body. She got involved with a satanic type of group before
committing the murder. The group is thought to has stolen goats from a local farm in order to
use for their sacrificial rite that they held out in the woods.
