  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why is new age so popular?

I just don't understand the deal with tarot cards, crystals, smudging with sage. etc. A lot of it is influenced by ancient Pagan, Hindu, and Buddhist theologies.

Is it acceptable for a Catholic to use Sage in their home for a blessing or no?

God bless

I wouldn’t. A priest and holy water is good enough for me. I do not know if the church would approve of sage or not but I’d lean towards a no.

If I had to venture a guess, it's popular because it offers pleasure and it demands nothing of the practitioner.

My generation (Millennials) and the ones after it are progressively self-centered, beyond any normal sense of self-concern. We've reverted to primal instincts seeking pleasure at all hours of the day and avoiding suffering at all costs.

It's a product of the zeitgeist, where Christianity is centered around sacrifice (the utmost of which was Christ's, but also lays out sacrifices that his followers must make in one form or another) New Age is just self-indulging.

Buddhism and Hinduism have nothing to do with tarot cards, crystals and whatever. They are not Christian,
but no one chooses the culture they're born into. All we as Christians can do is live like we believe what we
say.

There is a new age store in my area that sells a lot of Hindu and Buddhist items. Maybe that's why I was confused. *shrug*

I think there is a longing for the supernatural in humans. They are just looking in the wrong place when they go new age. Jesus is the only answer.

Yeah there's a strong intersection between eastern religions and the new age cult. Especially things like Buddhism, Taoism and Confuscianism because they're essentially godless belief systems.

When I took care of a woman with a transplant [therefore lower immunity] I read white sage helped keep the air pure and was an antibacterial.
The smell reduces depression as a nice candle would do.

So I bought a few.
No clue if it helped. I def didn't use it for spiritual reasons.
I have since wondered if it is ok to burn. I'm hyper focused on avoiding the wrong.
But it is probably like incense or candles or whatever for scent.
However; it has an odd scent rather than a great one.
I mean it's earthy and I can tolerate it, but I am not full into it.

Maybe I should add it to potpourri.
And I do not run around the house trying to use it for spiritual reasons.
I just thought it had benefits for the physical [as the Lord Almighty intended] because it does smell ok
and allegedly kills airborne bacteria or so I was led to believe.

I guess it is intent.
I seldom burn it and have some left, and maybe could make a candle with them.

This is a little aged but has some good info.

Slowly I am seeing 'wiccans' & new agers pulling away and turning Christian.
:groupray: :crossrc:
They state the two just cannot be compatible.
Even teaching yoga some realize they cannot do it if becoming Christian.
Maybe the Holy Spirit leading them far far away from all of it.

Had a 'friend' who opened a store [actually for her son a teen who my sons friend] and so I tried to buy stuff like incense or candles but she sold stuff that I gently tried to get her to avoid and stop selling.
I do not think she cared much for my help and we kind of didn't talk as much.
But the store eventually closed.
named ... mystic moon....
And I was so clueless about the new age stuff.

Control issues seems to be a big thing in that genre. My sister was into it and that was my impression along with a big dose of superstition. It drove her to the mental hospital.

New age adopted terms like 'chakras', nirvana [reincarnation], and so much more from eastern religions.
Much more, surprisingly, than we might know or realize.

They're a blend of eastern culture, mythology and pagan wiccan.

It's not Catholic to use it for a blessing.

We just need Holy water and prayers and the crucifix/crosses.

That said, sage burning of itself, without intent to use as some sort of ritual blessing, is ok for scent.
Some artisans mix it into potpourri or use in candles [add sprigs for extra scent]

The website Michie posted is accurate.
Humans themselves and leaves burning is just a no.
