Doss was a Christian determined to serve his country in the military while also keeping the Sabbath commandment and not taking the lives of other men even if those men were "the enemy". I met him personally in the 1980's.

A lot of Adventists have gone into the military as "medics" or in some line that does not require that they shoot someone. In fact only about 20% of military personnel are in roles where they would have to shoot the enemy.

I know a number of Adventists who went into the military and did carry weapons but a lot of them did not do that.

"40% of service members do NOT see combat, and of the remaining 60%, only 10% to 20% are deployed into the combat premise. Plus, the majority of these members enter the arena as supporting units." But Desmond Doss was in that 20% right at the bleeding edge of it.

Even just being a medic you dont have to be in the combat zone, look at the Ukrainians they are treating in the US..

They had a lot of things wrong though, his family wan’t abusive and they were also Adventists, but overall it was pretty good.
