  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am just a Christian, not catholic, however the concept of Jesus calling is based on something used in the occult. God is the God who speaks to us through the scriptures not through magic writing. My problem with the book was the assumption that it was God who was speaking to the writer, no one ever proved it was God...assumption is a dangerous thing to put one's trust in.

I found a Catholic devotional called Inspirational Thoughts For Every Day. The description says it’s a Catholic alternative to the Jesus Calling type books, so I ordered it.

I will. I have two other devotionals similar to it but this particular one grabbed my attention because it’s description says that it “makes a solid, powerful Catholic alternative to books like Jesus Calling.” That’s what I’ve been looking for.

Heed the Women of Grace advice - steer clear of Jesus Calling by Sarah Young. She purports to be speaking the words that Jesus spoke to her. This is private revelation and should only be used by the person they are spoken to. If they are to be listened to by others, the Church must confirm that they are authentic and from God Himself.

A friend gave me the Jesus Calling 365 Devotional and I read a few of the passages for the corresponding day and the first thing I noticed was how she was passing on the information to the reader - as if Jesus Himself were talking to you. Anybody can say Jesus is speaking through them and then tell others they should listen. Some things sound loving and caring and inspirational but they are not what God would have said. Here try this one on: "My friend, do not worry so much about everything. Enjoy the life I have given you and know I am with you always. One day we will be together in My Heavenly Home. So if you feel happy and relaxed when you smoke, light one up and enjoy the peace with Me."

The Church is there for guidance in what is spiritually good for you, they are not there to prevent you from seeking the Truth. God bless.

Agree.

We need to be very careful, of books claiming to be the voice of Jesus, things He has said, etc.
(It is much like listening to someone give a 'prophetic' word supposedly 'from God'.)

I am familiar with "Jesus Calling" and do not recommend the book at all.
Yes, heed the advice of Women of Grace.

Sarah Young’s books arent the only ones where God is “speaking to the reader” either. There’s at least one other. Some tiny black book, I forget the name now. I do like the Catholic book I posted about in post # 24, and the others from that series, titled, Words of Comfort For Every Day and Uplifting Thoughts For Every Day.

If you want to experience the presence of God go to the Eucharist.
Jesus is right there. You don’t need auto-writing for that.
Amen!

It always surprised me that non-Pentecostals would like this book, but I knew many that did.
What the author was doing was very Pentecostal/Charismatic in practice.

We have to be careful when hearing what we believe to be 'words' from God. We need to be discerning.
Some 'words' may be from God, but also they may be from our own spirit, or from an evil spirit pretending to be the voice of God ...
that's where discernment comes in.

Even a very well-intentioned person can be fooled by a false 'voice', if not very discerning ...

A false voice ... evil spirit ... can say many 'right' things for a time ...
getting the listener to 'trust' the voice as being God ...
and then begin to 'slip in' things that are not of God.
The purpose being to gradually lead astray ...

I don’t see anything heretical in either book, so far. The Charles F. Stanley book is newer to me so it will take me longer to know for sure.

I’ve read some Catholic articles that don’t agree with Jesus Calling because Young used the method of “automatic writing” to write it and it was compared to the occult, but I dunno…..
Creepy.

First I've heard of automatic writing. Interesting, and crazy. Honestly it's hard to trust nearly anything Protestant. Best to avoid all of it. The Catholic Church is rich enough as it is. A literal multiple lifetime of enrichment.

They sell it at a Catholic store here, or they did. I haven’t been there in a long time.
SOME Catholic stores sell a considerable amount of garbage. Just because they sell it doesn’t mean it’s safe. Maybe 50 years ago, but not now. Sorry.

I thought that if they sell it, they endorse it.
