  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

NIV Ephesians 1:
13And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,
i.e., the Paraclete who dwells in our spirit
14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.
deposit/guarantee
ἀρραβὼν (arrabōn)
Noun - Nominative Masculine Singular
Strong's 728: Of Hebrew origin; a pledge, i.e. Part of the purchase-money or property given in advance as security for the rest.

The Paraclete is God's advanced security deposit in us.

Strong's Greek: 728. ἀῤῥαβών (arrabón) — 3 Occurrences

2 Corinthians 1:
22 set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts
i.e., the Paraclete
as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.

2 Corinthians 5:
5 Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
For the 3rd time, G728 refers to the Paraclete. G728 appears exactly 3 times and every time, Paul was talking about the Paraclete.

Then there's this:

[LS] ἀρραβών
ἀρρα±βών, ῶνος, ὁ, earnest-money, caution-money, deposited by the purchaser and forfeited if the purchase is not completed, Lat. arrhabo, arrha, Isae., N.T. (A Hebr. word.)

We're commanded such things as to abide/remain and endure. What if we don't?

We're commanded to not lupeō the Holy Spirit of God en whom we were sealed (Eph4:30).

[BDAG] λυπέω • λυπέω 1 aor. ἐλύπησα; pf. λελύπηκα. Pass.: 1 fut. λυπηθήσομαι; 1 aor. ἐλυπήθην; pf. λελύπημαι (fr. λύπη ‘pain, grief ’; Hes.+) gener. ‘grieve, pain’.
1. to cause severe mental or emotional distress, vex, irritate, offend, insult, act. τινά someone (Test Abr A 8 p. 86, 9 [Stone p. 20]; Dio Chrys. 28 [45], 3; BGU 531 II, 18 [I AD], freq. in the sense vex, irritate, offend TestSol 2:3 D; Herodas 5, 7, 3; Ar. 15:7) 2 Cor 2:2a; 7:8ab. The object of λυπεῖν can also be a deity (Diod. S. 1, 65, 7; 8 τὸν θεόν; schol. on Apollon. Rhod. 2, 313 λ. τὸν Δία; cp. In εἴ τις λελύπηκεν 2 Cor 2:5 λ. used abs. is certainly more than cause pain or vexation. In Polyaenus 8, 47 it is used of the severe humiliation or outrage experienced by a king who has been deposed by his subjects.
We're commanded not to sbennumi the Spirit in Eph5:19:

[BDAG] σβέννυμι
to cause an action, state, or faculty to cease to function or exist, quench, put out
a. lit. extinguish, put out τὶ someth., fire
b. fig. ext. of a, quench, stifle, suppress
These are seemingly quite strong words with meanings that could argue against the completion of the purchased possession. It's not unknown that deposits are forfeited for various reasons by the decision of the purchaser. Some are even refundable under specified conditions.

There's an interesting thread that runs through the Text using the word dokimos and cognates. I see it as having to do with value as it is used in assaying of metals for purity and thus value. It's used in the sense of being tested & proven valuable.

See Will the Paraclete vacate his dwelling in a believer? and follow up there.

Saw it. Said enough here for now. Eternal Security is about as fun to discuss on this forum as Sabbath.
This would be a good issue to try the wagering system/game with you and me. You can always refuse to commit at the last step :)

Will consider it but leaving the computer for a while.

Does the wager really prove anything other than commitment? Do we need the Lord to declare the winner? How then does the Paraclete (Teacher/Reminder) in you rule for or against the Same in me? How much can you and your Helper afford to lose to me and mine? :)

In fact, in all my writings, I rarely prove anything in the first-order logical sense.

Good questions. Try the game and you will find out more :)
