  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The Catholic Church began with **Jesus Christ** and his teachings; Catholic tradition teaches that the Catholic Church is a continuation of the early Christian community established by the Disciples of Jesus ¹. The Church teaches that its bishops are the successors of Jesus's apostles with the Bishop of Rome, as the successor of Saint Peter, who ministered in Rome in the first century AD after his appointment by Jesus as rock upon whom the Church is built.

So my question becomes when you recite the Nicene Creed what are you understanding when you recite the third note of the Church?

It is about the Catholic Church. What others interpret is up to them.

This is my icon from the Church of the Nativity with a small capsule of dirt from the monastery grounds. A friend picked it up for me when he was visiting family in Israel and Jordan.

The Universal Church is the Body of Christ with the Foundation comprised of the Prophets and Apostles with Jesus Christ of Nazareth as the Chief Cornerstone. Beyond that are doctrines of men. Some simply only want foundational teachings while others want to build on top of it. Let each be convinced in their own mind.
Blessings.

Both really, the Catholic Church is catholic, others may be, I cannot say with certainty.
The Nicene Creed comes from the First Council of Constantinople. Denominations as such were not a part of the Church's self-understanding at that point and indeed did not become so until the Great Schism.

The 1st Council of Constantinople also established the principle of the Primacy of Rome. The question arose because the seat of the empire had moved from Rome to Constantinople (Nova Romanum - the New Rome) and the determination was that Constantinople was second only after Rome. This was understood more as a Primacy of Honour than a Primacy of Authority. The assent of all the Patriaches was required for a conciliar resolution.

English Christianity predates this and was largely also autocephalous. This only seemed to change following the Augustinian Mission, ostensibly for the conversion of the Angles, yet spent a great deal of time negotiating with the Celtic Church trying to get them to adopt the Western Date for the Easter Celebration. Deals were done and concessions were made. The situation changed again when under the banner of the Pope William of Normandy invaded England, following this the English Bishops were deposed, disposed and in some cases deprived of life, and they were replaced by Normans and Italians, and the Gregorian Rite was imposed on the English Church. This situation remained until (for other reasons no doubt) Henry VIII reasserted the autocephalous nature of the English Church.

One of the titles that the Pope uses is Pontifex Maximus (the Great Bridge Builder). There have been many Popes who have acted in such a way, and indeed the current holder of the Office is a shining example. There are also those who have not, and that is a matter of history. Whilst recognising that Peter was also responsible for the establishment of the Antiocene Patriarchy, I accept, with due honour the Primacy of the Bishop of Rome, as first among equals, very much in accordance with how we see this playing out in Acts 15.

That is true; the history and politics of those times are forgotten by many.
The assent of all the Patriaches was required for a conciliar resolution.
Such is the view in the East but not so much in the Catholic Church. Differences of view are expected. The eastern patriarchs have, by and large, become leaders of Christians under the dominance of Islam. And, of course, patriarchs like the one in Moscow, arose rather late.
English Christianity predates this and was largely also autocephalous.
I think this is a mainly Anglican perspective. It appears that distance, lack of communication between barbarian lands and Rome, and various other matters that arose after the Roman empire left Britain are a sufficient explanation for the views in Celtic Christianity without invoking any theory of autocephalic Celtic Christianity.
Whilst recognising that Peter was also responsible for the establishment of the Antiocene Patriarchy, I accept, with due honour the Primacy of the Bishop of Rome, as first among equals, very much in accordance with how we see this playing out in Acts 15.
Yes, that is what I understood your view to be.
