  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

WASHINGTON -- The chairman of the House Oversight Committee said Tuesday he is moving forward with holding FBI Director Chris Wray in contempt of Congress because the department has not turned over a bureau record that purports to relate to President Joe Biden and his family.
Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., criticized the federal law enforcement agency after he said his committee was told it would not gain access to an unclassified form that describes “an alleged criminal scheme” involving the president and a foreign national.
“The FBI's decision to stiff-arm Congress and hide this information from the American people is obstructionist and unacceptable,” Comer said in a statement.

That statement is a hoot.

What's that? All the people who were A-OK with the executive branch ignoring congressional oversight in the last administration are suddenly up in arms about it happening during this one? Quelle surprise.

From the op's link:

In response, the FBI said in a statement that it remains committed to cooperating with lawmakers in “good faith,” and that “any discussion of escalation under these circumstances is unnecessary."

The FBI said it offered to give the Oversight committee “access to information responsive to the Committee’s subpoena in a format and setting that maintains confidentiality and protects important security interests and the integrity of FBI investigations.”

The bureau called that offer “an extraordinary accommodation."

Comer and Wray are scheduled to speak by phone on Wednesday amid the standoff.

And the form Comer is demanding to see?

The document Republicans are requesting is a form the FBI uses to record unverified tips. The FBI stressed that in its response to Republicans: “The FBI regularly receives information from sources with significant potential biases, motivations, and knowledge, including drug traffickers, members of organized crime, or even terrorists. … Recording the information does not validate the information, establish its credibility, or weigh it against other information known or developed by the FBI.”

...and today:
Director Wray --

“You have asked for what you say is a ‘precise description’ of an ‘alleged criminal scheme’ contained in is a single FD-1023 report. You express concern that the FBI has inappropriately ‘failed to disclose’ such a report ‘to the American people,’” Christopher Dunham, acting assistant director for the FBI’s office of congressional affairs, said in the letter to Comer, a copy of which was obtained by CNN.

“It is critical to the integrity of the entire criminal justice process and to the fulfillment of our law enforcement duties that FBI avoid revealing information — including unverified or incomplete information — that could harm investigations, prejudice prosecutions or judicial proceedings, unfairly violate privacy or reputational interests, or create misimpressions in the public,” he continued in the letter.

FBI Director Christopher Wray declined during his testimony before the Senate Appropriations Committee on Wednesday to confirm whether the document exists.

“I will tell you that we understand completely the importance of congressional oversight, that’s important to me,” Wray said. “I also understand very much, as I think you do, the importance of us protecting sources and methods and ongoing investigations.”

Much ado about nothing....but hey, Comer got his headline.

I just saw a FOX segment where Grassley said he already saw the document they are subpoenaing Chris Wray to see .
>> Chuck Grassley on Fox News: "We are not interested in whether the allegations against Vice President Biden are accurate or not." <<

The entire charade over the form is performance art and salacious innuendo rather than anything of substance.

When did we shift to a parliamentary-system with an “opposition party” doggedly clamoring that the opposite party’s POTUS is unworthy?
Especially from a Senior Senator, who’s, at best, the ranking-member of whatever committee he’s a part of.

We have to ‘investigate’ that how it works now!
We need better writers.

It’s not even this, though, the form (FD-1023), is raw, unrefined “tips” from people. This document has probably never been released to Congress before so there’s going to be a lot of wrangling on whether it gets “released” at all.
There has to be ground-rules between the branches, that’s what this is, the “process”.

In other words, “normal”.
But today? OUTRAGE!

No one is above the law. Not even the Director of the FBI.
Clearly if there was nothing of substance in the content there would be no reason not to release it, logic dictates that there is something being hidden.

Hmm, make a random unverified accusation to the FBI, then subpoena records of that random unverified accusation to try and manufacture outrage. Rinse and repeat until people forget all the campaign promises about the economy or immigration or whatever.

What is the sense of having investigative powers if one doesn’t utilize them?

They explained why they are reluctant to release it. They explained they would allow redacted access to it.

...there was a time when Sen Grassley lived up to his title. It's a shame to witness his decent into performative poltics.

This from CNN:
"The document has origins in a tranche of documents that Rudy Giuliani provided to the Justice Department in 2020, people briefed on the matter said.
The allegations of wrongdoing by the then-vice president, many originating from sources in Ukraine, were dubious enough that Attorney General William Barr in early 2020 directed that they be reviewed by a US attorney in Pittsburgh, in part because Barr was concerned that Giuliani’s document tranche could taint the ongoing Hunter Biden investigation overseen by the Delaware US attorney.
Barr told reporters at the time why he was being cautious: “We can’t take anything we received from Ukraine at face value.”
Former Pittsburgh US Attorney Scott Brady oversaw the FBI investigation of the Giuliani claims. The 1023 document being demanded by Comer is among the products of that investigation."

This is the same Rudy Giuliani who was gallivanting around Ukraine working with Ukrainian Russian cutouts to find dirt on Biden.
This is the same Rudy Giuliani who was knee deep in getting the US Ukrainian Ambassador removed as he and Trump et al attempted to blackmail Zelenski.
This is the same Rudy Giuliani who is once again knee deep in the Hunter Biden laptop non issue.
This is the same Rudy Giuliani who had his law license revoked, facing several lawsuits, and will be indicted.

It looks like Barr had the claim reviewed though even he understands claims out of Ukraine at that time could not be taken seriously.
It appears that FBI did look into it, and well, where there is Rudy, there is the press conference in front of landscaping company that's next to a porn shop claims of bat quackery.

Yes and have you looked at their redacted documents, if you did you would see an ocean of blackout.

No I haven't looked at it. Last I heard it required viewership in a SCHIF. Maybe you can screenshot for me.
