  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

A teen girl who had her phone confiscated set her school dormitory on fire, police say. 19 children died.

A teenager is accused of setting a fire that killed 19 fellow students in Guyana, officials said.
She was angry that her phone was taken away as punishment for seeing an older man, police said. Doors had been locked overnight to prevent girls from sneaking out, according to the fire service.
Wow!

Wow is an understatement. We've seen kids knock teachers out here in America over their phones. I worry about kids being violent with parents here too. Especially if parents take the kid's phone.

I suppose we are just beginning to see the repercussions of the social media/technology boom. My psychology professor back in 2014 showed us statistics about how much cell phones raised anxiety and stress levels in users. I was astounded that day. I didn't even have a cell phone yet. So I was completely flabbergasted how and why a phone and the internet, which had both been around for years, could stress folks out so much. Fortunately, this CF site is the extent of my social media presence online.

Wow!
I imagine there's a lot more to this story. Angry teenagers don't just set buildings on fire.

Also... don't lock 60 children inside a building and bar the windows and only give ONE person the key. This whole thing could have been avoided.

Angry teenagers doing irresponsible things is kind of their thing.

I agree. They shouldn't have been unsupervised or locked in.

Praying.... ever watch some police videos? I don't mean seek them out and just watch over and over would be for a believer unwise. But I noticed in the ones I saw every girl that had a phone almost went nuts asking as they were going in or in the cop car wheres my phone..WHERES MY PHONE.

At 62 we see today vs yesterday.. and am sure you have people coming in to eat yet both don't talk or I can see them now families all on phones no one talking. 7 out of 10 times I forget my phone and we just have one. No chatting on it all the time, no facebook, not twitter, no whatsapp no tender, no tictok, no.. the other one what use to just be for posting pics but so much more now.

"National Security Adviser Gerald Gouveia told the Associated Press that the suspect in the incident, a pupil at the school, was accused of setting the dorm on fire after being disciplined for having a liaison with an older man."

There's irresponsible and there's mass murder. This sort of behavior is not normal teenage rebellion.

I somewhat doubt that mass murder was the intention here. Just a consequence of a horribly flawed locked door policy of the dorm.

Of course, if there is any evidence of this girl meaning to kill a score of her peers, I'd be happy to look at it and change my opinion.

A harsh but fair decision on her part. Not having a phone sucks.
I'm all for dark humor, but 19 children being burned to death over a tantrum isn't the time for it.

I was hoping that post referred to the teacher who took the phone away from the girl. That hopefully is what was deemed a fair decision and not the fire.

I can understand.

Just for me, I like to incorporate dark humor into this messed up world. I am a big fan of the late Gilbert Gottfried. He'd say a lot of shocking things, but if you listen to his more obscure work you found out he actually did care about things and had a heart. Dark humor is just really how he dealt with things. Maybe it's not everyone's cup of tea, but that mindset really appeals to me.

I find it a sad story, but nothing can really be done about it now.

This is truly a sad and deeply disturbing incident. How have we, as humans, come to sink this low over a stupid electronic device.
Addiction is amazing.
