  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Travel advisories; Thoughts?

Several countries have travel advisories. They aren't overly high but still.

Do you have any thoughts?

I wonder what other developed countries have travel advisories...

The Australian Govt runs a comprehensive travel advisory service called Smart Traveller.

We need it . Australians do a lot of overseas travel.

In 2019 (pre COVID) almost 10 million, out of a population of 26 million, Australian residents went overseas.

My last trip was 3 weeks in Turkey and Egypt.

I think I misunderstood your post. (your article was behind a paywall).

Were you asking if other countries had issued travel advisories covering the US?

The current Australian government travel advisory for the US is low risk :

"Exercise normal safety precautions".

Colour me green with envy. Turkey pre Covid was...fantastic. And Egypt as well. My wife and I got married in Cairo and had our 40th anniversary there. Pre covid again. But you're right. We must easily have highest number of travel miles per head of population on the planet.

Have you noticed we (ABC Aus) are now calling Turkey - Türkiye?

Apparently, the Turks have asked that English speakers/writers adopt the Turkish spelling and pronunciation. It's a bit like the shift from 'Peking' to 'Beijing' a few decades ago.

Works for me - I just have to find the U + double dot key on my keyboard.

Then we should call the country where I was born 'Cymru'. Pronounced 'Kum ree'. But I won't be annoyed if you say 'Wales.' You can't dictate how someone pronounces your country.

I travel internationally on average seven time a year. Every time I do, I look at the US travel advisories.

This is from France just a couple of weeks ago.

Location: Paris, Place de la Opera; Rennes Event: Large-scale demonstrations continue throughout France with reports of hundreds of black-clad violent protestors infiltrating the demonstrations, seeking clashes with police, damaging property, shooting fireworks, and setting fires. Police in riot gear have responded with tear gas, water cannons, and targeted police actions to deter further violence. U.S. citizens should ...

The UK is a level 2 as is the US.

I absolutely love Egypt also, I go yearly to Cairo and Alexandria. They are at a level three at this point

The OP may want to clarify the advisories referenced are for the U.S. From the linked article, I think Australia and France were the most accurate. However, as with any country, one would be wise to consult with locals in the area for particular areas to avoid etc.

It's practically the first thing my wife does when we check into a hotel. Ask reception 'Are there any areas you'd recommend that we avoid?'

If they say “the second floor” rebook elsewhere.
