  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am pretty pessimistic about the future and our environment. It may be very likely that one day we will be eating the weeds on our yard.

Per my sister, people already eat weeds and call it gourmet. They will put dandelion greens on salad and claim it's now a fancy salad.

I'd personally like to add that we will also be eating the bugs in our backyard.

But in all seriousness, my sister and I have been studying foraging for this very purpose. She was mentioning earlier that you can use plantain seeds as a binder in baking (like what eggs do) I don't think using them is that realistic, but, it's interesting to know. We were also talking about milkweed pods; dad says they taste like a much more mild asparagus, but you have to pick them while the pods are still small (about an inch)

I bought Apios Americana or the Indian Potato; the first American settlers learned to dig these up and eat them like you would potatoes and it helped them survive the winter (among other foraged foods of course)

The amount of calories you'd get from leaves wouldn't be enough to sustain a person, but the nutritional value (iron, vitamins a, bs, c, e, k etc) would be very helpful. That's one reason why I got the Indian Potato because it would provide more calories and can be stored up into the winter.

If we can eat chickweed, dandelion and wild violets my husband and I are set for life. ;) We watch a number of streams on YouTube about foraging plants and mushrooms but so far none about bugs.

Seems every day there's something in the news about farmers going out of business due to all types of new legal requirements and use of resources. If we don't have farmers where will our food come from unless we individually grow it ourselves? Reminds me of sci-fi stories in which people eat a pill at every meal and that's it. No worries about food. Maybe that's where we're heading.

Violet flowers and leaves are edible with the leaves having a high level of vitamins A and C. They can be used in salads or cooked as greens. The flowers can be made into jellies, candied, or tossed into a salad.

I need to get more comfortable and confident identifying. It may be our future. I know duckweed is high in protein.

They come up every year and I can never decide whether to pull them up or let them fill in the empty spots they seem to emerge from. Guess I might just let them grow!
