  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Can people who disagree on abortion stop attacking each other?

A better question would be when does the age of accountability start?
The answer is,
When did you learn "right from wrong"?
When God says it starts. Which will be different for different people.

It's not true because conception is not in the womb.

If you said we're formed in the womb, as the Bible does, then it's after conception. Because conception does not take place in the womb.

Now you are splitting hairs. It does not matter where conception takes place, it is all the 'secret place' because it happens unseen. Nobody knows conception is taking place or sees the journey down the fallopian tubes to the womb. Some woman suspect early on but most will not know for days or even a few weeks.

The zygote is forming from the moment of conception. Around the fifth day, the mass of cells becomes known as a blastocyst. The zygote didn't sit there doing nothing those 4-5 days, it was changing and developing because it is alive. Non life doesn't grow and develop. No matter how long you stare at a rock it has nothing within itself to change and develop. The only way a rock changes is if an outside force changes it because a rock is not alive, a zygote is.

The Hebrew does not use the word womb it uses vasseter, meaning: a covering, hiding place, secrecy.

It's almost as if the people thousands of years ago didn't have a detailed understanding
It seems they had as much understanding then as we do "scientifically" now (with the exception of evidence for a soul) perhaps science will catch up with that concept too.

So both identical twins are alive at conception?

Yes or no?

Twinning

"Before about 14 days post-conception, some embryos split into two embryos (identical twins). Therefore, some think, embryos before this point aren't yet individual, unitary human beings.

But the fact than one organism can give rise to two doesn't mean it isn't an individual organism. A flatworm, as Patrick Lee observes, can be cut to produce two separate flatworms, and that doesn't mean a flatworm isn't a flatworm. The evidence of embryology shows that human embryos, likewise, are unitary and individual organisms even if twinning later occurs."

That's not a relevant answer to the understanding of the unborn being living human beings

It does tell us that life doesn’t necessarily start at conception. The second embryo does not exist at conception.

If they are brain dead they are effectively human remains.

Parallel with brain death

"The irreversible cessation of brain function indicates the death of a human being. Some people argue, then, that the life of a human being cannot begin until brain activity begins.

But the reason (total) brain death matters is that it means the body can no longer function as an integrated whole (even if some cells and tissues are still alive). The brain, in older humans, is essential for that purpose. Before the development of the brain in the first place, however, the very young embryo does not require it in order to function as an organism and direct her own growth (including the development of her brain).

Thus, while a brain-dead patient is a corpse in the process of decay, an embryo is a living and growing individual."

Scientifically speaking, all the questions relating to whether life begins at conception have been answered.

Life is continuous

"Some people point out that the sperm and egg are alive. Indeed, life, in a broad sense, is continuous (stretching back to the beginning of life on Earth). So it's not accurate, they claim, to say that life "begins" at conception."

"It's true that life in general is continuous, but the life of an individual human being is not continuous. It has a beginning and an end. The beginning is called conception. "Although life is a continuous process," explains the textbook Human Embryology & Teratology, "fertilization … is a critical landmark because, under ordinary circumstances, a new, genetically distinct human organism is formed."

Comparison to body parts

"The difference, however, is that the unborn is a whole organism—an individual member of the species—and other cells and tissues are mere parts. So the unborn isn't just living and human (in the adjective sense of those words); she's a life and a human (in the noun sense). None of us was ever a kidney or a skin cell or a sperm cell. But each of us was once an embryo."

The evidence of embryology shows that human embryos, likewise, are unitary and individual organisms even if twinning later occurs."

That's a typical answer for someone who can't effectively argue their position
Also that rule about not being able to argue for my position without being banned.

Does this mean you believe that I would talk about my loved ones that way?

That's not a relevant answer to the understanding of the unborn being living human beings
It’s relevant to the claim that they had the same level of understanding as we do.

You already did:
I would actually. Brain death is the death of a person regardless of if their corpse can be kept plodding along and I would not pretend that my loved ones were still around if they are in that state.

If they are brain dead they are already dead. A machine is artificially keeping their organs alive.

You are correct. Scientifically, an embryo has more right to be called a human being than a brain dead person on life-support.
Thus, while a brain-dead patient is a corpse in the process of decay, an embryo is a living and growing individual."
