  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Wrong link, chief.

Try the very first paragraph of this one:

The Pluto Issue
You are completely bereft of basic comprehension skills "chief".
Now you have completely confused yourself on which link is being referred to.

How many times does it have to be repeated before it sinks in attendance and voting is not compulsory at IAU conferences.
Refusing to reopen the planet debate in 2009 is not evidence of vote rigging.

It's back to you chief show us the evidence the vote was rigged in 2006.

Q also V please:
In an effort to leave nothing to chance, Kerr says, an anti-Pluto faction of the IAU waited to call the controversial vote until the end of a global conference in Prague. By that time, most of the planetary scientists, Pluto’s staunchest defenders, had gone home.

“The reality is, when they did that, they actually rigged the vote. … It wasn’t exactly done on the up and up.”

SOURCE

Also note:
Not only is the IAU’s definition of a planet 15 years ago roundly ignored by planetary scientists, but the IAU’s use of a vote made science seem arbitrary and political, undermining trust in science itself.

In that light, I think it's safe to say that science's version of Pluto's reality took a hike, didn't it?

Even if I accept your claim here, this is NOT a time when reality was wrong, was it? And yet that's specifically what I asked in post #45.

So come on, AV. Give me an example of a time when reality was wrong?

I don't think you'd recognize it, as your posting history shows.

I'm not going to put a dollar in a video machine that's not plugged in.

Totally ridiculous.
If individuals were determined to vote one way or the other they would have hung around until the last minute of the conference to vote.
Why would Pluto supporters have the propensity of leaving earlier, it is as nonsensical as suggesting astronomers wearing bowties would be prone to leaving earlier.

This is not an example of vote rigging.

Vote rigging involves;

· Misleading or confusing ballot papers. ...
· Ballot stuffing. ...
· Misrecording of votes. ...
· Misuse of proxy votes. ...
· Destruction or invalidation of ballots. ...
· Tampering with electronic voting systems. ...
· Voter impersonation. ...

Show us how the vote was rigged using these parameters as a basis.

You clearly cannot provide evidence for vote rigging.
Actually I can.
Pluto (minor-planet designation: 134340 Pluto) is a dwarf planet in the Kuiper belt, a ring of bodies beyond the orbit of Neptune.

SOURCE

No rigged vote = no dwarf planet named Pluto in the Kuiper belt.

I don't think you'd recognize it, as your posting history shows.

In other words, you can offer no actual evidence of reality being wrong. In fact, I'll bet that it's just a case of reality being different what you think reality should be like based on your religious beliefs.

I'm not going to put a dollar in a video machine that's not plugged in.

What in the world does this mean? Did you once have a VCR that was coin operated? what video machine ever required coins to be inserted directly into it?

Completely illogical and irrational.
Even if a vote was taken which it wasn't as a show of hands revealed an overwhelming majority to demote Pluto, how do would know the outcome was the result of a rigged vote instead of legitimate technical reasons.

You fail the pub test miserably because you have no evidence that any one or more of the following characteristics for a rigged vote occurred.

· Misleading or confusing ballot papers. ...
· Ballot stuffing. ...
· Misrecording of votes. ...
· Misuse of proxy votes. ...
· Destruction or invalidation of ballots. ...
· Tampering with electronic voting systems. ...

I guess the only real reason AV doesn't like Pluto being changed is because it messes with his perceived status quo.

Which makes sense.
I'm just one man here.

Imagine if you lived in the state of New Mexico!
The New Mexico House of Representatives passed a resolution in honor of Tombaugh, a longtime resident of that state, that declared that Pluto will always be considered a planet while in New Mexican skies and that March 13, 2007, was Pluto Planet Day.

SOURCE

If you lived in New Mexico, what would you be doing every March 13th!?

Would you go to the window once a year and shout: I'M MAD AS CAN BE, AND I'M NOT GONNA TAKE IT ANYMORE!

Or would you sit in your living room with your hands to your ears and shout: STOP IT! STOP ALL THIS CELEBRATING! I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!

Or what if a Pluto Planet Parade marched right past your home!?

Academia breeds hostility and zero tolerance, doesn't it?

One man with a fixation. Well, one of many fixations.
LOL

And the New Mexico House of Representatives, the Illinois Senate, and the California State Assembly aren't?

Can't I agree with them, without being "one man with a fixation"?

But if they were voting to get the Ten Commandments removed from public view, that would be a different story though, wouldn't it? ;)

This isn't about them. This is just about you. You're the one who brings Pluto up every chance they get.

I see.

Well, you do have a point, since I don't get paid to bring it up.

You know? for a legitimate vote?

Still not once shown how it was a rigged vote.

And you've also never even answered why and for what purpose it was demoted from planet to dwarf planet and what such a thing serves.
