  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is it okay for Catholics to read the Jesus Calling devotional by Sarah Young?

How about Every Day in His Presence by Charles F. Stanley?
You’ve asked this before and yes it is. As long as it does not contradict Catholic teaching.

I have no problem with Jesus Calling. I find nothing heretical in it. Never read Everyday in his presence.

God bless
I don’t see anything heretical in either book, so far. The Charles F. Stanley book is newer to me so it will take me longer to know for sure.

I’ve read some Catholic articles that don’t agree with Jesus Calling because Young used the method of “automatic writing” to write it and it was compared to the occult, but I dunno…..

Oh sorry, I forgot that I already asked this. Anyway it’s always good to get new opinions.
Yes it is. I remember a Catholic Study group of another book that I cannot remember the title of. Something by Rick Warren I believe.

I never heard anything about automatic writing that Young employed.

But what about a deco written by Protestant pastor, Charles F. Stanley?
Not all writings of Protestants are off limits. Ask a priest to help direct you.

Has anyone here read He and I described in the Women of Grace blog?

As a Catholic, we have many great books that contain so-called messages from God, such as Gabrielle Bosset's He and I and many writings from the saints; however, as this blog explains, none of them ever participated in automatic writing. There's a big difference between the two that cannot be understated.

I never heard of it but this whole Jesus Calling thing was started when Young was inspired by a similar book which was written with automatic writing, called God Calling. A devout Catholic friend of mine recommended that one to me and so I bought it.it seemed a little off, IMO.

Yeah I tend to stay away from stuff that have iffy claims like that. I know if there is a Protestant book that is stirring interest enough that people want to get together and discuss it as a group in the Church, it must be approved by the priest. Things are getting so confusing anymore, the last thing we need is books adding to it. It is always wise to remember about demons parading about disguising themselves as angels of light. One cannot be too careful.

That’s true. Even in the Lutheran church when we had Bible Study and read books as a group the books had to be approved by our pastor.
One time I asked him about Jesus Calling and he was concerned about what was said in one of your links above, that newer editions are have been revised.

Yes it is always smart to watch what the flock are consuming.
