  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What is the interpretation of John 1 vs 1…
In the beginning was the word and the Word was with God and the Word was God

Digging deeper

for those who believe in the trinity as being God…I believe also…it makes sense but I can’t explain it.
How do you explain three deities being one God

my belief in God drives me to seek the truth and I am excited about the Word of God

well God is three persons Father, Son, and Holy Spirit but one nature which is God. It is similar to being yourself, then thinking about yourself, at the same time being aware that you are thinking about yourself. Well maybe that did not help much. The Trinity is not that easy to explain. The Father perpetually generates the Son and the Father and the Son through their love perpetually generate the Holy Spirit. So one God expressed in three persons who work together because they are one even though each one has its own tasks. Sorry this is not that easy to explain and anyone who thinks they understand it is fooling themselves.

Welcome to the CF.

In the beginning means that that situation already existed when the universe was created. Back then, 13.8 billion years ago, the Logos was with God. The word "Logos" means "Word" but it also means "Logic" and "Reason." Like your logic, or word, is generated from your mind, the Logos was with God. The Logos was not a creature of God but rather He was Himself God.

Php 2:5-11; Col 1:13-20; and Heb 1:1-4 also describe the Word in the beginning.

Digging deeper. for those who believe in the trinity as being God…I believe also…it makes sense but I can’t explain it. How do you explain three deities being one God. my belief in God drives me to seek the truth and I am excited about the Word of God
There have been several threads about the Trinity. You may find the following recent thread useful:

One God in Three Persons, Blessed Trinity

You're certainly welcome to ask questions and make comments.

The prologue of the Gospel of John is harkening back to Genesis 1. The words, "In the beginning" tip us off that fact. Compare John 1:1 with Genesis 1:1

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (John 1:1 NASB 95)

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. (Gen 1:1 NASB 95)

So why is John doing this? Because John is about to tell how Jesus is the Divine λόγος, Logos, the very Word of God. Or the independent personified expression of God. And the Logos became enfleshed or incarnate and lived amongst us.

John also deals with the same subject matter as the opening of Genesis such as creation vs new creation, light vs darkness, the First Man vs The Incarnate Son of the living God.

There is a ton more to say but I think this gets the conversation started.

There is one God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, a unity of three coeternal Persons.

God refers to Himself both as “He” and “Us.” In the Old Testament the plural form of one of the nouns for God (’elohim) is quantitative: “Let Us make man in Our image.” The plural appears both with the verb “Let Us make” and the possessive suffix “Our” (Gen. 1:26; 11:7). Isaiah, in vision, hears the Lord: “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” (Isa. 6:8).

Example of plural unity in marriage - In Genesis 2:24 man and woman are to become one (’echad), a union of two separate entities. Significantly, the same word is used of God in Deuteronomy 6:4. Marriage and God’s nature are both described as a plural unity.

Three divine persons are often linked together (Isa. 42:1; 61:1, 2; 63:8-11). The angel tells Mary that her child will be called holy because the Holy Spirit will come upon her (Luke 1:35). At the baptism of Jesus (Matt. 3:16, 17) three divine persons are present. Jesus links His miracles to the Spirit of God’s power (Matt. 12:28). Because of the Great Commission, new disciples are baptized in the singular “name” of the three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit (Matt. 28:19).

Welcome to the Forum.

If you're new to Christianity, you may get more confused than enlightened here.
You might consider reading a good book instead.

I recommend "Knowing God" by J. I. Packer. It's a classic.

To answer your question: first of all, it is three persons in one being, God.

And it is above our understanding, we can only partially grasp it, because in our natural world, no such thing exists.

There is nothing that comes close to being like the trinity.

While still looking for meaning….i understand that our body is the temple of God…so keep it holy….

so than why did Jesus listen to His mother and turn the water to wine…?
Why would He not honor His mother by do as she requested? There is also a good deal of symbolism in what He did and how He did it, a good commentary would reveal much of that and would be well worth reading.

Is it safe to say Jesus is God in the flesh?
Yes, absolutely

Joh 1:14 And the Word became flesh
and dwelt among us.
And we saw his glory,
the glory as of the Father’s only Son,
full of grace and truth.

Col 2:9 For all the fullness of Deity lives bodily in Him,

1Jo 1:1 What was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the Word of life—2 the life was revealed, and we have seen and testify and declare to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us.

1Ti 3:16 Without any doubt, the mystery of our religion is great:

He was made visible in the flesh,
vindicated by the Spirit,
seen by angels,
proclaimed to the Gentiles,
believed in throughout the world,
taken up in glory.

Is there something wrong with that? Is drinking wine "fouling the temple" in your opinion. Paul recommended drinking wine to Timothy and (more importantly) Jesus drank wine and shared it with His disciples.

On another note, I interpret Jesus turning the ceremonial water of the Jews into the "new wineskin" product of the new covenant.

As I have read (not a quote word for word)
Samson was a nazaraite not supposed to drink strong drinks…
If alcohol is okay then why not for Samson?

Because he took a vow to God that he wouldn't drink any alcohol.

In Joshua chapter 5: A man appears that says….as captain of the host of the Lords army am I now come…
Furthermore Joshua did bow down and worship. was this a pre appearance of Jesus?
Yes, it was.

There are different views about heaven. In Judaism, there are 7 heavens and I think this view is consistent w/ Christianity:

Seven Heavens - Wikipedia

The 1st heaven is the atmosphere of earth. The 2nd is the cosmos with the planets and stars. Paradise is in the 3rd heaven. The 7th heaven is where the throne of God is.

Heavenly Jerusalem is probably in Paradise.
