  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Has the Holy Spirit explicitly led you to keep the Sabbath?

Brother, yes! Jesus is carrying out the Father's plan to save us from sin. The plan was illustrated with animal sacrifices in an earthly "copy" of the true heavenly temple where Jesus ministers daily as our High Priest. Jesus forgives our past sins to give us as many chances as we need to remain obedient to the commandments, as one would learn to play the piano by many attempts until we gain victory over sin.

For I have come down from heaven to do the will of God who sent me, not to do my own will. (John 6:38 NLT)

Brother, God has not changed how He deals with sin from the beginning by the death of Jesus. However, the necessary death of Jesus took place in the middle of God's implementation of His plan to save us from sin, changing the situation before Jesus' death from that after Jesus' death, although the plan is the same. Before Jesus' death, a "copy" of the temple was established on Earth to show what will happen later in the heavenly temple after Jesus' death. His ministry as our High Priest is to forgive our sins daily, giving us as many opportunities as we need to grow in obedience to the commandments that show our victory over sin.

Here is the main point: We have a High Priest who sat down in the place of honor beside the throne of the majestic God in heaven. There he ministers in the heavenly Tabernacle, the true place of worship that was built by the Lord and not by human hands. And since every high priest is required to offer gifts and sacrifices, our High Priest must make an offering, too. If he were here on earth, he would not even be a priest, since there already are priests who offer the gifts required by the law. They serve in a system of worship that is only a copy, a shadow of the real one in heaven. For when Moses was getting ready to build the Tabernacle, God gave him this warning: “Be sure that you make everything according to the pattern I have shown you here on the mountain.” (Hebrews 8:1-5 NLT)

Some background first: I believe in the Baptism of the Holy Spirit as a second experience (check out this thread to know why if interested). I've also watched tons of testimonies about supernatural experiences of all sorts, and in particular I know people who testify about being led by the Holy Spirit via: audible voice, dreams, visions, someone else prophesying to them, etc. (I can share links to specific testimonies for anyone interested in examples btw.)

Now to the point: Imagine that someone is filled with the Holy Spirit and led by the Holy Spirit 24/7. Let's call that person X. If X is expected to keep the Sabbath by commandment but he currently doesn't, logic tells us that the Holy Spirit would convict X of his sin, lead him to repentance and guide him to embrace Sabbath keeping (just like you would expect for any other sin).

So my question is: have you ever been explicitly led by the Holy Spirit to keep the Sabbath?

But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
Galatians 5:18

Brother, the stand-in was the animal sacrifices in the earthly temple "copy" of the true heavenly temple that is separate from the commandments. Let's hear it from Paul to see where people misunderstand Paul about what is "more glorious" in the new way, which remains forever.

He has enabled us to be ministers of his new covenant (Jesus as our High Priest in the heavenly temple). This is a covenant not of written laws (an earthly temple copy with animal sacrifices), but of the Spirit (Jesus' faster cycle of forgiveness). The old written covenant (an earthly temple copy with animal sacrifices) ends in death (condemnation); but under the new covenant (Jesus as our High Priest in the heavenly temple), the Spirit gives life (Jesus' faster cycle of forgiveness). The old way (animal sacrifices), with laws etched in stone (10 commandments), led to death (condemnation), though it began with such glory (righteousness) that the people of Israel could not bear to look at Moses’ face (fading away). For his face shone with the glory (righteousness) of God, even though the brightness was already fading away (from Moses' face). Shouldn’t we expect far greater glory (righteousness) under the new way (Jesus' faster cycle of forgiveness), now that the Holy Spirit is giving life? If the old way (animal sacrifices), which brings condemnation, was glorious (10 commandments), how much more glorious (11 commandments) is the new way (Jesus' faster cycle of forgiveness), which makes us right with God! In fact, that first glory (10 commandments) was not glorious at all compared with the overwhelming glory (11 commandments) of the new way (Jesus' faster cycle of forgiveness). So if the old way, which has been replaced (animal sacrifices), was glorious (10 commandments), how much more glorious (11 commandments) is the new (Jesus' faster cycle of forgiveness), which remains forever! Brother, not everything Paul says is for "infants in Christ". He addresses "spiritual people" in ways that are difficult for "infants in Christ" to understand.

Dear brothers and sisters, when I was with you I couldn’t talk to you as I would to spiritual people. I had to talk as though you belonged to this world or as though you were infants in Christ. I had to feed you with milk, not with solid food, because you weren’t ready for anything stronger. And you still aren’t ready, for you are still controlled by your sinful nature. You are jealous of one another and quarrel with each other. Doesn’t that prove you are controlled by your sinful nature? Aren’t you living like people of the world? When one of you says, “I am a follower of Paul,” and another says, “I follow Apollos,” aren’t you acting just like people of the world? (1 Corinthians 3:1-4 NLT)

Paul assumes the listener knows what he has said elsewhere and uses summary words like "the law" where he has already expanded on that word elsewhere. I will add in what he summed up as "the Law", because he assumed that the listener was a "spiritual person" and not an "infant in Christ".

But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under [the condemnation of] the law of Moses. (Galatians 5:18 NLT fixed)

The "spiritual person" listening knows that he left out the word "the condemnation of" above because he already said it below so that it would be understood without Paul needing to constantly repeat himself when speaking of "the law", as if he were only speaking to "infants in Christ".

If the old way, which brings condemnation, was glorious, how much more glorious is the new way, which makes us right with God! (2 Corinthians 3:9 NLT)

Brother, no! The stand-in animal sacrifices are separate from the commandments. The commandments are the 10 commandments before Jesus and the 11 commandments after Jesus that we grow in obedience to them. The commandments do not remove past sins in the stand-in animal sacrifices for the death of Jesus.

Once a religious leader asked Jesus this question: “Good Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?” “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked him. “Only God is truly good. But to answer your question, you know the commandments: ‘You must not commit adultery. You must not murder. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. Honor your father and mother.’” The man replied, “I’ve obeyed all these commandments since I was young.” When Jesus heard his answer, he said, “There is still one thing you haven’t done. Sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” (Luke 18:18-22 NLT)

Jesus has added an eleventh commandment to the new covenant with the addition of "one thing you haven't done" that was not possible before Jesus. His "new commandment" to "follow" His example! Obedience to all of the above 11 "commandments" is what will show our victory over sin, thanks to Jesus' faster life-giving cycle of forgiveness than the old, slow way of animal sacrifices.

Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them. (John 14:21 NLT)

By reading the scriptures, which includes the writings of Paul, we know the law of Moses has been nailed to the cross, being set aside and therefore abolished in His flesh, because it was temporary, having been added until the the Seed should come.

The spiritual person knows better than to add words to scripture that makes the scriptures conform to one's own perspective.

Well... in the Matthew version, Jesus adds Love your neighbor as yourself. That's not one of the 10, though I agree it is related.

In the Mark version, there's the commandment about Do not defraud. Not one of the 10, but again, related.

So maybe we see that differently.

Well... in the Matthew version, Jesus adds Love your neighbor as yourself. That's not one of the 10, though I agree it is related.
Brother, by process of elimination, love your neighbor as yourself is said instead of the tenth commandment: you must not "covet" what belongs to your neighbors. The statement summarizes the last 6 commandments of the 10 commandments.

Someone came to Jesus with this question: “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?” “Why ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. But to answer your question—if you want to receive eternal life, keep the commandments.” “Which ones?” the man asked. And Jesus replied: “‘You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. Honor your father and mother. Love your neighbor as yourself.’” “I’ve obeyed all these commandments,” the young man replied. “What else must I do?” Jesus told him, “If you want to be perfect, go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” (Matthew 19:16-21 NLT)
In the Mark version, there's the commandment about Do not defraud. Not one of the 10, but again, related. So maybe we see that differently.
Again, by process of elimination, "you must not cheat anyone" is the tenth commandment: you must not "covet" what belongs to your neighbors.

As Jesus was starting out on his way to Jerusalem, a man came running up to him, knelt down, and asked, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked. “Only God is truly good. But to answer your question, you know the commandments: ‘You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. You must not cheat anyone. Honor your father and mother.’” “Teacher,” the man replied, “I’ve obeyed all these commandments since I was young.” Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him. “There is still one thing you haven’t done,” he told him. “Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” (Mark 10:17-21 NLT)

What was a stand-in for the death of Jesus to forgive sins are the animal sacrifices and not the ten commandments.

He has enabled us to be ministers of his new covenant (Jesus as our High Priest in the heavenly temple). Brother, that is a human tradition that contradicts the word of God.

It's God's word to us in the New Covenant.

The law of Moses was the middle wall of separation that divided Jew and Gentile.

Do you sacrifice animals for your sins?

For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity.
Ephesians 2:14-16

The law of Moses was the middle wall of separation that divided Jew and Gentile.
Brother, the wall of separation is their own added human laws that made their converts "into twice the child of hell you yourselves are". The Jews did not enter the kingdom of heaven, nor did they allow others to enter by their own laws. They do this through their human laws that enslave people instead of freeing them from sin because they are "blind" guides, as Jesus tells us in the following passage.

“What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you shut the door of the Kingdom of Heaven in people’s faces. You won’t go in yourselves, and you don’t let others enter either. “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you cross land and sea to make one convert, and then you turn that person into twice the child of hell you yourselves are! “Blind guides! What sorrow awaits you! For you say that it means nothing to swear ‘by God’s Temple,’ but that it is binding to swear ‘by the gold in the Temple.’ Blind fools! Which is more important—the gold or the Temple that makes the gold sacred? And you say that to swear ‘by the altar’ is not binding, but to swear ‘by the gifts on the altar’ is binding. How blind! For which is more important—the gift on the altar or the altar that makes the gift sacred? When you swear ‘by the altar,’ you are swearing by it and by everything on it. And when you swear ‘by the Temple,’ you are swearing by it and by God, who lives in it. And when you swear ‘by heaven,’ you are swearing by the throne of God and by God, who sits on the throne. Brother, the wall of separation is their own added human laws t

Please read what the word of God actually says.

  • He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances

  • having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances

He Himself abolished the law of commandments contained in ordinances.

Jesus Christ abolished in His flesh the law of commandments contained in ordinances, which is the law of Moses that was added temporarily until the Seed should come.

What purpose then does the law serve? It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was appointed through angels by the hand of a mediator.
Galatians 3:1

  • It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come.

By saying “until” the Spirit is indicating what was added, was temporary.

What was added, was the law of Moses, and since the Seed has come , what was added is no longer part of the Covenant.

Now we walk according to the Spirit and obey the laws and commandments that are written on our heart and mind.

But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Galatians 5:18

which is the law of Moses
Brother, no! God's law is not "hostile" to the Gentiles, nor did it ever "separate" the Jews from the Gentiles whom they were meant to save. What accomplished this hostility and separation were their own traditions in human laws added by the Jews in violation of God's directive in the following passage.

So be careful to obey all the commands I give you. You must not add anything to them or subtract anything from them. (Deuteronomy 12:32 NLT)

By adding their own laws, they separated themselves from the people they were meant to save. Jesus tore down their system of law in contradiction to the above directive.

For Christ himself has brought peace to us. He united Jews and Gentiles into one people when, in his own body on the cross, he broke down the wall of hostility that separated us. He did this by ending the system of law with its commandments and regulations. He made peace between Jews and Gentiles by creating in himself one new people from the two groups. Together as one body, Christ reconciled both groups to God by means of his death on the cross, and our hostility toward each other was put to death. He brought this Good News of peace to you Gentiles who were far away from him, and peace to the Jews who were near. Now all of us can come to the Father through the same Holy Spirit because of what Christ has done for us. (Ephesians 2:14-18 NLT)
that was added temporarily until the Seed should come.
What was temporarily added are the animal sacrifices as a stand-in for the future death of Jesus.

Love your neighbor as yourself is not the same as Do not covet, so it looks like we disagree there.

Love your neighbor summarizes six of the ten commandments plus a whole lot more!

I'm probably going to be away from my phone for a few days. Peace be with you all!

Brother, love your neighbor as yourself means do not covet as well as the other 6 last commandments of the 10 commandments and more, as you say later.

Correct, you can love more than the 10 commandments, but no less than the ten commandments before Jesus. Following Jesus, you can certainly love more.
