  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Evidence of miracles.

What's His name?

John 14:13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
You tell me?
All the Names of Jesus - Bible Resources

The Bible translation I have calls him Jesus. If God wants to be known by something else why let the translations be wrong?

Why would it matter anyway? If God knows I am asking in His name and I use Jesus instead if Emmanuel or something else that just seems like God that does not really care about me. If my kid asked me for something that they needed and I could provide it for them I would not care if they called me daddy, dad, father, Clizby or Mr. Wampuscat etc. If I said to them, I will not help you because you called me dad instead of daddy, what kind of father would you think I was?

So let me get this straight.

You, an atheist, can't understand why God doesn't answer your prayers?

In addition, you make the point that we should be able to call Him anything, and He's obligated to answer?

We have a poster here in this very thread that won't talk to me, whether I call her by her name or otherwise.

And you can't understand why God has you, an atheist, on IGNORE?

No, I don't understand why God won't answer prayers of sincere Christians in need.

In addition, you make the point that we should be able to call Him anything, and He's obligated to answer?
Nope, I never said this.

I addressed this above.

So what name are we supposed to call God so He may answer our prayers?

How about FATHER?

Matthew 6:9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

Oh, that's right ... you're an atheist.

Proud to admit He's not your Father, even if you were in a foxhole.

And now you can't understand why He doesn't jump when Christians want something?

Did YOU jump every time your children asked you for something?

No, I said need something. Like food or clothes etc. You have a bad habit of straw manning other peoples arguments.

Did YOU jump every time your children asked you for something?
When they need something I do.

Oh ... like this ...

Hebrews 11:32 And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets:
33 Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,
34 Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.
35 Women received their dead raised to life again:
and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection:
36 And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment:
37 They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented;
38 ( Of whom the world was not worthy: ) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.

39 And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:
40 God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.

You're wondering why God doesn't take everyone in the red and put them in the blue ... right?

I don't know.

Maybe it's because ...

Hebrews 11:40 God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.

Should they take academia's advice and pray to milk cartons instead?

Another strawman.

I am not asking for God to make anyone perfect. You quoted it yourself. Jesus said ask anything in my name and I will do it. So why is it that when sincere Christians ask God for food they need they do not receive it?

Should they take academia's advice and pray to milk cartons instead?
What does this have to do with God not answering sincere Christians prayers for necessities?

What on Earth does this mean?

What do milk cartons have to do with anything? The only thing milk cartons do other than hold milk is have pictures of missing children printed on them. Do you think that printing a notice on a milk carton is a prayer? (to the carton) Then you add what can only be described as a gratuitous swipe at "academia" which hasn't been remotely to this thread since you diverted it from Mike's original claims.

There is no such evidence. James Randi wrote a book on it, The Faith Healers, and found evidence of fraud and lies, but no miracles.

I found an online excerpt from The Faith Healers, in which Randi attempted to verify this case. (Isn't it interesting that you have to go back 60 years for an example?)
Full text of "The Faith Healers James Randi"

The relevant text is about 24 column inches from the top, or you can use control-F to find the patient's name. Suffice it to say the 'miracle' is poorly-documented and full of contradictions.

Bear in mind, all mysteries are not miracles.
Thus it is with all miracles - lies and scams.

Apriori sceptics make a lot of money
And a priori religionists?

Pretty sure Joel Osteen rakes in much more cash than Randi ever did.

Stop projecting and aim that 'laser sharp scientific mind' of yours at your own mere beliefs.
For once.

You do love playing whac-a-mole. As soon as we debunk one miracle you go...look over here, here's another!

It's like looking at a bunch of fuzzy photos of bigfoot and wondering why in the heck can't someone manage to get a clear photo. They get pictures of everything else for gosh sakes.

It does get tiresome after a while, and I would suspect that at some point not even your fellow Christians find it persuasive. But you keep doing you, and we'll keep summarily dismissing you.
Aye, good points.

So you're suggesting that hurdle number 1 in getting God to answer prayers is to use the correct name.

It seems that Clizby WampusCat was right.
Clizby was smart enough not to answer that question.

For some reason you think that having people on earth with the powers of God would be a handy resource or something. And are angry that is not the case.
Huh? where did you get that from?

More likely, they would be crucified and I don't see why you think that is good.
I'm just trying to determine where the simmering anger is sourced.
Someone with the powers of a god would be impossible to crucify unless they were willing - and why would they be willing?

The discussion was about the empirical failure of prayer to be medically efficacious. Where did this idea of my 'simmering anger' about the lack of people with God-like powers come from? o_O

I know I suggested that if prayers had demonstrable medical benefit they would be useful, but it's a bit of a stretch from that to saying I'm angry with the lack of earthly Gods...

Have you ever studied Christianity? You know, read the story of Jesus and how He died? Because that is what the story is about.

An obscure 8-year-old thread? Why do you think any of us would know or care about it?
As long as you know what it means now, who cares if it's an obscure eight year old thread, or an obscure eight year old dictionary?
