Rotterdam police open fire as Covid protest turns into ‘orgy of violence’

The mayor, Ahmed Aboutaleb, told reporters in the early hours of Saturday morning that “on a number of occasions the police felt it necessary to draw their weapons to defend themselves” as rioters rampaged through the shopping district, starting fires and throwing stones and fireworks at officers.

“They shot at protesters. People were injured,” Aboutaleb said.

I find it interesting how Aboutaleb can say it so nonchalantly, and everyone's is just like; oh, okay then...

I mean, did they not just shoot at unarmed protesters? Because in American culture, this would spark outrage.

Interesting... You can see the different method of policing in the video, they actually use police vans to drive towards the rioters, which pushes them back, rather than the American style of forming a human wall with shields and tear gas.

I'd prefer the tyranny of a democratically elected government over the tyranny of a violent street mob.

No. The reports state the police shot people because they felt their lives were in danger, not because they were destroying property.

Do they make the details of these reports public there? I wonder, because it's good to follow up and make sure the government was within the law.
