House Republicans oust Rep. Liz Cheney from top post
The voice vote was overwhelming. Cheney said afterward: “I will do everything I can to ensure that the former president never again gets anywhere near the Oval Office.”
Cheney opened the meeting as chair with a prayer. The motion was declared almost immediately.
There were voices in support of her, but they read the room to realize it wasn’t worth demanding a [formal] vote, said Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.), a member of the Freedom Caucus who supported Cheney and believes she was canceled. “Even the people who voted ‘no’ felt it was unnecessary. It wasn’t going to change the outcome,” Buck added.
The position will now be filled in a new election. A candidate forum would have to be scheduled before an election is held. The forum could be as soon as Thursday for a vote on Friday.
