  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The trouble with using the Bible as a history book is that you have only one unattested source,
You mean God?

... which means that historians are not likely to take it very seriously.
Yup ... you meant God.

Time always seems to be the wild card to me. Science can’t even explain why it only flows forward and not backward. And, at what point in time did our history supposedly become accurate (many argue never)? The Egyptian timeline is not even agreed upon by everyone New timeline for origin of ancient Egypt. No reason to pick this article apart, my only point is that history and opinions vary. Maybe some of their rulers served at the same time, governing different parts of the kingdom, and succession wasn’t linear for each one. And, personally, I don’t take a lot of stock in Ussher’s date either… if the Bible had wanted a date-stamp it would have given one. The Flood happened.

Who are "they", exactly? Do you know the names of authors and editors of Genesis texts?
Adam, Shem, Jacob, Joseph, just to name a few.

Two words: toledoth and colophons.

Real scholarly. That should insure you won't understand.

But then I can just see the Muses saying: "Mission accomplished."

There is virtually no source in the history of Christianity that says that Genesis is written/edited by Adam, Shem, Jacob etc. You are simply making the stuff up.

Traditionally, it was ascribed to Moses. Thats the best you can get. But even Moses is very hard to defend, because it was usual to name books according to main figures, not according to authors.

When we accept that all today's main nations descended from the first people in Mesopotamia after the flood, we must push the flood much more back to the past than most creationists propose.

Because China was already there when they propose the flood happened.
Whooosh!

But it would not be the "Noah's Flood" we are discussing here. We are discussing a flood which is asserted to have covered the entire terrestrial globe at a specific date in the 3rd millennium BC. The possibility of a mammoth ancient flood which later gave rise to the Noah story is not seriously challenged by any of us "Bible skeptics" and would not in any case be acceptable to creationists.

But there is nothing in the Noah's story saying that it covered the globe and happened in the 3rd millenium BC. So...

So, a local Mesopotamian catastrophe in the beginnings of human civilization (so that it affected seriously the humanity as such) is still a valid reading of the story.
