  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Can you choose more than one patron saint?

Hello everyone and happy advent,
I have converted to Catholicism and hope to begin the process of formal reception into the Church. One nagging question is who I should pick for my patron saint. At first I was leaning toward John the Evangelist, because his gospel and letters have always had a special place in my heart.
One of the articles I looked at had a patron saint generator, and when I used it I got Blessed John Duns Scotus; idk how much stock I should put in this generator, but if he wants to pray for me I won't rebuff him. Now, it just so happens that he is pretty much a perfect fit for me vocationally, being the patron saint of scholars and students. John the Apostle and Evangelist though, as patron saint of authors, friendship, and love, is a better fit for the person that I want to become. Because of this, I'd hate to choose one or the other. Besides, I think having an apostle and a medieval saint as my patron saints would provide a kind of 'balance' of patronage through church history, if that makes
Would I be allowed to name both of them at my confirmation?
Blessings,

I think you are only allowed one patron saint. I never chose one nor was I asked but you are allowed to devote yourself to many in your faith journey. I’d ask your priest. He may be more than happy to oblige.

I don't know if there are any hard and fast rules on this, but I think you generally just pick one. Maybe consult your priest.

Assuming you are picking a confirmation name, you could always pull a Wojtyla and double up (e.g. "John Paul"). I suppose that's trickier when both of your options are named John. ^_^

Honestly, I would suggest going with the Evangelist. You like him because you have read his works and his writings resonate with you. I think that is a great reason.
