Psychologically speaking it just looks like some refuse to take responsibility for the fact that their refusal to protect themselves and other stupid behavior lead them to this sad outcome.

or it could simply be denial of how sick they are

Nurse: Some patients who test positive refuse to believe they have Covid-19 - CNN Video

Apparently even some of those who test positive and are hospitalized with COVID-19 still don't want to accept that reality. It's rather sad all around. :(

Lucky thing for us... "Cancer was not just invented yesterday" or we might not "Already know" this --

=================================

Healthfully

"After someone has been diagnosed with cancer, current or anticipated losses such as control over daily living, health, and even life itself can contribute to grieving. Grief expert David Kessler describes five commonly recognized stages of grief -- denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance -- as the framework for learning to live with loss. Keep in mind, though, that not everyone who's grieving experiences all these stages or goes through them in a particular order.

Denial
Denial helps you survive news that’s too hard to handle. Overwhelmed by feelings of shock or numbness, you grasp only as much as you can accept at the moment. According to the Mayo Clinic, a short period of denial can be a healthy coping mechanism,..."

====================

If we wanted to be mean about it we could call that stage "South Dakota" instead of denial.

The information about Covid has been spotty and inconsistent from the start of the pandemic. I don't blame people for being skeptical, or feeling like they don't know who to trust, or what information is accurate and what isn't.

And no, I'm not a Covid denier.

Health professionals have long known how serious this pandemic is. The problem is that when the pandemic became political, the waters got muddied.

Even health professionals haven't given consistent, transparent information across the board. Which is unfortunate, as it just erodes the trust that the public has in their doctors, and a pandemic is not the time you want that.

The challenge when dealing with a novel virus is that there is a lot we just aren't going to know upfront. So it should be expected that recommendations and information will change as researchers learn more.

That still doesn't take away from the fact that health professionals were sounding the alarm bells back in Feb/March. And the messaging has been pretty consistent since then.

I don't know why the personal stories of 1 nurse are "news".

Sure...they're sad....but news?

Interviews with people are a thing that news stations do.

Agreed.

If you believe the problem is that some people struggle with the fact they're going to die....you've bought into the political narrative.

I don't agree that the information has been consistent, but I do agree whole heartedly that there was a frantic push to churn out revelations and discoveries about the virus as quickly as possible, and that was a big part of the problem. The public is screaming for information so they can feel safe, but there's only so much known in these early stages. The pressure on doctors, scientists, researchers, and the government, was enormous. Things that should have happened, didn't. And things that didn't need to happen, did.

This is where strong leadership needs to come in. We've seen what aggressive, early action can do to stem the tide. Taiwan in particular stands out. Only hundreds of reported cases and only 7 official COVID-19 deaths. And they are right next to China.

Whatever lessons they learned from SARS epidemic, they learned them well.

And even though we dealt with West Nile , SARS , AIDS, and Ebola , the USA didn’t learn our lesson of not putting science illiterates in charge during a pandemic

An island.

Name a country that isn't geographically isolated that's doing as well as Taiwan.

Thailand. Laos. Vietnam.

And ironically enough, China.

There really aren't many countries doing as well as Taiwan geographically isolated or not.

And honestly bringing up the fact they are an island is bit of a red herring. You also have to consider their relative proximity to China and the frequent nature of travel to/from there. Yet, the moment word of the new virus broke they took aggressive action to contain it: Taiwan led the world in closing down for Covid-19, now it wants to do the same with opening back up - CNN

Actually all the nations doing really well are geographically isolated.

And honestly bringing up the fact they are an island is bit of a red herring.

No...it's not. It's far easier to shut down people crossing your borders when you're an island.

The only real exception here is S Korea and people crossing that border risk being shot.

Do you honestly think it's a coincidence that Taiwan, New Zealand, and Australia all fared better?
