Caught On Video: Man Topples Statue Of Virgin Mary Outside Brooklyn Church In Broad Daylight

The statue depicts Our Lady of Guadalupe, one of the most iconic images of the Virgin Mary, and it is particularly revered by Mexican-Americans.

A second statue in the group outside the Coney Island church depicts St. Juan Diego. Catholics believe his cloak was miraculously impressed with an image of Mary. It is now on display at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, north of Mexico City.

98cwitr,

It was inevitable and probably the goal all along. The earlier ones paved the way to remove 'offensive' items.

Yes, all the attacks on churches (mostly Catholic it seems), and statues/icons and such -- they have accelerated a lot, and we shouldn't imagine it's only a few individuals' with odd views, but instead these are the wrong-acting tip of the iceberg.

For each vandal, there are millions that have the same views, but don't vandalize.

Vast numbers -- tens of millions -- that have learned to think of 'Christianity' as evil, from appearances (just going on what they see from a distance, watching Trump).

Many who voted for Trump hoped/thought he could preserve or protect their way of life.

Having 'Christians' vote for Trump is one key part of what caused the growing widespread view that religion/Christianity is actually an evil. (in the view of those millions)

Why?

Because Trump visibly does many things people detest, such as making personal attacks on individuals, lambasting groups, demonizing refugees and so on.

So, thought Trump was elected to keep people safe in their way of life....

In actual reality Trump is helping to destroy the remaining safety and security they had, and those Trump supporters will wake up some day and it will be largely gone, and Trump will be one of the key ways they lost that status and lifestyle they hoped to secure.

What does Trump have to do with the Virgin Mary?

Anyway, I may not agree with the RCC on matters religious or secular, but I still wouldn't knock over one of their statues because of that disagreement. Would this man appreciate it if someone came on to his property and destroyed something he loved on it? I doubt it. And people can have all the political and social reasons in the world for doing whatever it is they're doing (though I note from the video that this didn't come into it; I only say that here because politics have subsequently been brought up) -- that doesn't change the reality of what they're doing. He's still destroying the property of a church.

If he is found to be of sound mind/aware of what he was doing, I hope he will be prosecuted, same as people who destroy the property of synagogues, mosques, Hindu temples, or other places of worship are very rightly prosecuted.

To people who know little of Christianity, but are angry and want to vandalize, one statue is much like another, and it will just be a question of which one is available. The more widely available symbols will be the ones more often attacked.

An entire religion has been built over the centuries upon doing exactly that. If it has finally come alive in North America then we will have to accept this just as we expect others to accept our ways.

No. This is not one of those things. I can't speak for your country, but here in America what that man did is a crime. It would not matter if he said it was out of some religious conviction of his; it's still destruction of another's private property, and quite possibly trespassing and/or some kind of assault charge (depending on the nature of the fight he got into with the other man).

Assuming that there are motivations behind this for which there is currently no evidence is not helpful.

I feel like there are a lot of assumptions on this topic. There’s absolutely nothing given to suggest what the political or religious views were of the man who committed the act.
Some information on this widespread increase in attacks, which isn't just in one area of the world:

Gatestone Institute reviewed thousands of newspaper reports, police blotters, parliamentary inquiries, social media posts and specialized blogs from Britain, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy and Spain. The research shows (see appendices below) that roughly 3,000 Christian churches, schools, cemeteries and monuments were vandalized, looted or defaced in Europe during 2019 — which is on track to becoming a record year for anti-Christian sacrilege on the continent.

Violence against Christian sites is most widespread in France, where churches, schools, cemeteries and monuments are being vandalized, desecrated and burned at an average rate of three per day, according to government statistics. In Germany, attacks against Christian churches are occurring at an average rate of two per day, according to police blotters.

Attacks on Christian churches and symbols are also commonplace in Belgium, Britain, Denmark, Ireland, Italy and Spain. The attacks overwhelmingly involve Roman Catholic sites and symbols, although in Germany, Protestant churches are also being targeted. ...

I agree but there have been may incidents over the summer which point in that direction in the videos we see as clothing choices of the topplers especially female, give it away. Will this be an elephant in the room situation?

Too bad it doesn't record religious or non-religious persuasion of the attackers. Guess that would be politically incorrect.

Or just simply unavailable. You don't have to share your religious persuasion with anyone you don't want to.
True but there is lot more credibility in those who can name their oppressor(s) rather than simply play victim and say the sky is failing.
