As a spanish speaker, I always associated it in my native language as a desire to be with and to value someone else with love.

In English the word "worship" descends from an Old English word worðscip (worthscip), meaning "the condition of having worth". Literally worth+ship, where the "ship" ending to the word means it is a condition, or state of being.

Over time the word came to be used to mean ways by which we show the value or worth something has. And the word could be used to describe a lot of things, not just worship of God, but the ways which we show how we value anything. For example, the honor which is to be given to a king could be described as worship.

But in modern English the word is used, almost exclusively, in a religious sense to speak of the special honors, the special devotions, the ways one demonstrates or expresses how they value and regard God as worthy. And thus it is viewed as something which exclusively belongs to God.

But that is, in its very broadest meaning, what it means:

From the Oxford Dictionary online
"1 The feeling or expression of reverence and adoration for a deity.
‘the worship of God

1.1 The acts or rites that make up a formal expression of reverence for a deity; a religious ceremony or ceremonies.
‘the church was opened for public worship’"

Romans 12:1 - I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.

Kjv Romans 12:1-2
"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."
Lovely verses I had to post kjv because it's so beautiful.

We do indeed worship God/Jesus out of love with total reverence (honor/glory) recognizing Him as our creator ... this is what sets Him above (apart from) any other claimed "god(s)" or anything else in the universe.

Romans 1:25
New Living Translation
They traded the truth about God for a lie. So they worshiped and served the things God created instead of the Creator himself, who is worthy of eternal praise! Amen.

Revelation 14:7
King James Bible
Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.

the word creator (above referenced verse) in the Greek is this:

Strongs

ktizó: to build, create
Original Word: κτίζω
Part of Speech: Verb
Transliteration: ktizó
Phonetic Spelling: (ktid'-zo)
Definition: to build, create
Usage: I create, form, shape, make, always of God.

HELPS Word-studies

2936 ktízō – properly, create, which applies only to God who alone can make what was "not there before" (Latin, ex nihilo, out of nothing, J.Thayer); figuratively to begin ("found"), especially what is habitable or useful.

In the end ... it does come down to who one worships .... Elohim ... who is our creator and who alone is worthy to be worshipped ... or something/somebody else.

The 7 day creation account in Genesis is very important ... if anyone dismisses it they are dismissing God as the creator of everything.

Interestingly .... this includes the 7th day Sabbath as it was/is a day God created for man ... part of His creation. His "seal/signature" of creation. No one can re-create this day ... it can be attempted to be replaced ... but no one can change the day God created.

So .... a rhetorical question ... if one worships on the 1st day of the week (sunday) are they giving reverence (honor/glory) to God/Jesus as the creator (or giving honor/glory to someone/something God did not create)? Something to think about.

Exodus 20:8 (pointing back to His created day)
New King James Version
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

Matthew 12:8 (Jesus speaking)
Berean Study Bible
For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” (creator of the 7th day)

Above Jesus identifies Himself as the creator by referencing the 7th day Sabbath only HE created.

Yes, and generally that would be a dictionary statement, though in our Holy Bible it is obedience and faithfulness to our Creator-God by His immutable "Word Of Truth". In application that tells us to take "all the counsel of God" and be "...rightly dividing the Word of Truth"; all this as beyond the Old Testament religion of Israel (pointing foreword to the Messiah whom they rejected and crucified). We must worship the Lord Jesus ---God's "...beloved Son" (the Messiah) ---daily to have any part in our God (note John 3; John 14; Romans 8; etc.). Keep looking up, friend!

I shared part of this in a similar thread "What is worship anyway?"

The word "worship" in John 4:23 is actually "proskuneo" which is to adorn, fall down and kiss the feet of.
The word "worship" in Romans 12:1 is actually "latreia" which is service rendered to God.

We often mix up two completely different meanings here. Yes, worship should come from the heart, but in John it's a point of adoration - we are singing praises and thanksgiving to Him for who He is, what He's done. In Romans it is directly talking about how you walk your walk, letting it be representative of a way that Loves and Respects God. Why? Because Romans 12:2 states "Do not be conformed to the pattern of this world...".

I believe these two scriptures are talking about two different aspects of worship and SO MANY people mash them together. Proskuneo is what we do with music and song in our house of worship, and Latreia is what we do after we walk out of that house of worship.

Worship means living your life in a way to bring glory to God based on his good pleasure in your life rather than what he hates, which is sin.

This is interesting because in finnish calendar we have sunday placed as 7th day. Monday is the first day.

The creation account stands ... 7th day of creation (not the first day)

Genesis 2:4
This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made them.

Genesis 2:3
Berean Study Bible
Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because on that day He rested from all the work of creation that He had accomplished.

God set up the 7 day week with His sabbath being the 7th day (blessed it and made it holy). Man is the one changing the days .... not God.

Yes, the 7th day is Saturday --the end of the week, and it spoke to Israel as remembering God's works of creation. The Lord Jesus is the fulfilment NOW of God's blessings, as in TYPE in the Old Testament; and God gives us "...on the First day of the week" the day of remembrance and worship in His "...beloved Son" (whom Israel rejected). Let us praise and worship the Lord Jesus on the Lord's Day ---our so-called Sunday.

Apparently, worship takes many forms but be careful not to be any good at any of them lest you be cast out as a self serving egotist.
'It doesn't matter how good you are'....ah the battle cry of the untalented wannabe that wouldn't ordinarily be allowed within 50 feet of a microphone, yet punishes our ears very Sunday morning.

In addition I see worship as biblically shown, as being heartfelt real devotion to our Creator-God ---which certainly means devotion to His Son (God coming as a man): the Lord Jesus Christ. God says: 'He that has the Son has eternal life, and he that has not the Son has not that life (note the Epistle: 1 Jn. 5:10-12). Are we devoted to the Son and thus trusting our Creator-God?

Worship is living life, the Word, and songs during the week, and not just on Sundays. It is making our lives life songs to the God who is worthy of all honor and praise. It is worshipping the Father in SPIRIT and in TRUTH.
