  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is that your final answer? - lol
Those texts have a Damnationist bias.

One of the most common biblical manuscripts used to make our modern English translations is known today as the Nestle Text. Yet it was Prof. Eberhard Nestle himself who warned us in his Einfhrung in die Textkritik des griechischen Testaments: "Learned men, so called Correctores were, following the church meeting at Nicea 325 AD, selected by the church authorities to scrutinize the sacred texts and rewrite them in order to correct their meaning in accordance with the views which the church had just sanctioned."

St. Jerome wrote: "They write down not what they find but what they think is the meaning; and while they attempt to rectify the errors of others, they merely expose their own" (Jerome, Epist. lxxi.5).

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"The Encyclopedia of Religious Knowledge"
by Schaff-Herzog, 1908, volume 12, page 96
German theologian- Philip Schaff writes :
"In the first five or six centuries of Christianity there were six theological schools, of which four (Alexandria, Antioch, Caesarea, and Edessa, or Nisibis) were Universalist, one (Ephesus) accepted conditional immortality; one (Carthage or Rome) taught endless punishment of the wicked. Other theological schools are mentioned as founded by Universalists, but their actual doctrine on this subject is not known."
[Dan 12:2 KJV] 2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame [and] everlasting contempt.
[Rev 14:11 KJV] 11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.
[Rev 20:10 KJV] 10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet [are], and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
Eberhard Nestle’s Greek text, which first appeared in 1895, was based on Tischendorf’s 8th edition of 1869-72, Westcott and Hort’s edition of 1881, and the 1902 edition of D. Bernhard Weiss (TBS Article No. 56). Tischendorf stayed closely to the Codex Sinaiticus, while Westcott and Hort largely followed the Vaticanus. I think the KJV has that by several centuries... furthermore, Nestle's Greek New Testament wouldn't explain why the Old Testament Hebrew has the same notion of everlasting judgment. The synergism between the phrase "everlasting life" and "everlasting contempt" shows that you cannot modify one without the other. If you change the meaning of "everlasting" in regards to contempt, you also have to change it in regards to life.
The answer to that question would be dependent on your definition of hell.
I do not believe in a place of eternal conscious torment (ECT) with no hope of escape.
Reserved for those who had never so much as heard the name of Jesus and for those
who had heard of Jesus but either actively rejected him, or did not actively receive him.
I do not believe that God's justice infers the verdict of ECT. Mercy is the alternative to punishment. (which many conveniently forget) The mercy of God is never-failing. The hell of Damnationism would be a colossal failure of God's mercy and love.
Loving our enemies is a godly trait. (Matthew 5:43-48) The hell of ECT goes directly against that.
The Bible says that we cannot be forgiven unless we forgive others. (Matthew 6:15) Should we expect any less from God? Will God hold an eternal grudge against the aforementioned?
What sort of heavenly Father would devise such a horrible place? And then send the vast majority of those he created in his image to that place for all eternity? (countless billions) Does that sound like the plan God had for his creation? What sort of monster would premeditate such a design?
That being said, I believe there is biblical support for all three doctrines of the final judgment.
- Damnationism
- Annihilationism
- Universal Restorationism
Therefore we will find scriptures that support and conflict with all three views. Those who support UR want to make others aware of the scriptures that support that position.
That "swallowing up" of death and hell is called the second death. There is no Biblical escape for the second death.... only from Adam's death which is the first death (that is the resurrection).
[Rev 20:6, 10, 14 NASB] 6 Blessed and holy is the one who has a part in the first resurrection; over these the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with Him for a thousand years. ... 10 And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are also; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. ... 14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire.
[Rev 21:8 NASB] 8 "But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part [will be] in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death."
Loud and clear.
But not really an answer to the question. Which is a shame, given that you said it is dangerous to shred much of the Bible, which indicates you want to take everything into account. So also the OP? Or no?
Yup indeed it is. The Lake of all lakes has two primary ingredients, theion & theioo, both rooted in Theos.
Theos is the Source, Guide & Goal of the all.
Are you saying hell does not exist?
Hell exists. Not as a place, like Dante's lurid and sadistic descriptions, but as the fire of God's love which burns away all that is not like Him. It exists to purify, as the refiner's fire spoken of in scripture. It exists to bring all things back to Himself, no matter how long it will take. For the most evil of people (you know, the usual suspects, Hitler, Mao, Lenin, Stalin, King Leopold of Belgium) it may well take the ages of ages spoken of in the Bible. For others, the purification may be very short, like the Holy Monks of Mt. Athos.
Isn't this more just of God than creating souls you know will fall into sin with no plan of redeeming them and being willing to see them, as sentient beings, suffer anguish forever? Isn't this more in line with His love?
QUOTE="Strong in Him
I was simply speculating that if 95% of the church teaches a doctrine from Scripture and another much smaller group comes along and teaches something else, it is more likely to be the 95% that is correct.
And specifically, on this forum and in the churches, universalism is not orthodox belief.
But that's not true. Do a study of Church history. There was a time in the Church, just prior to the Council of Nicea AD 325, that the majority of people were Arians and did not believe in the deity of Christ. It was so bad that the phrase "Athanasius Contra Mundum" (Athanasius Against the World) was coined. It describe the fact that only Athanasius and the Bishop of Rome stood against all the heretics who claimed that Jesus is a created being.
So are you saying that unbelievers who die in their sins meet with the Lord, realise he exists then then go through a period of cleansing in the lake of fire, which will also mean they die to self etc, and THEN they will be saved and able to be with God?
That's a fair description. What's unfair about God punishing for sins if we do not repent here, with the goal of restoring the damaged soul to the glory of its creation? Or should the goal be just to make souls suffer?
If so, the only advantage of repenting and following Jesus voluntarily know is to avoid having it thrust upon you after death.
I see no Scriptures which say "accept God now or be forced to after death.
Again, Jesus said that unless people repent of their sins they will perish, Luke 13:3. Perish; not cleansed after they die.
It's not "be forced" Please read what I have written on the issue of our "free-will" and God's hand in bringing us to repentance without forcing us in anyway.
Search Results for “free will” – Muddling Through Life
There is no way that I would ever say, or think, that God is a torturer.
You clearly haven't read any other posts of mine.
Okay. I accept that. But you do realize that there are multitudes of people who describe God in exactly that manner, some with considerable zeal and glee in anticipation of sinners getting fried. I know this personally. I used to attend Fundamentalist churches and read Chick tracts, both of which appeared to have a real zeal to see sinner roasted rather than repentant.
If someone has heard the Gospel, repeatedly been told that if they do not repent and accept Jesus they will perish and consistently says "rubbish; I'm not going to do it", they have made that statement knowing the consequences.
What is God to do? Say "well you were warned, but I'm going to let you off and go against what I said I would do?"
I honestly wish you would read what we are saying here a little more carefully. There is no being "let off" and given a First-Class ticket through the Pearly Gates for those who have practiced evil. God is just and they will, according to Scripture, receive in their souls just payment for all that they have done here on earth. The Good News of the Gospel is A.) Christ has conquered death. It exists no more. B.) Christ has opened a way for you to avoid the punishments due you for your sins. Turn to Him in repentance.
Only if you are saying that mature adults with minds and will of their own and the ability to understand, are like 4 year olds.
Of course we are like 4 year olds in terms of understanding spiritual truth. Good grief, man, just look at all the bizarre ideas about God that are floated about in this world: Muslims, Buddhists, Mormons, pagan religions, etc. We are exactly that stupid. That is why Jesus refers to us as sheep, not wise old owls or cunning wolves.
Some of which don't appear to be Scriptural.
"Repent now so that you will have an easy life in heaven; if you don't want to, you will be made to go through a tough cleansing period in heaven - but you will still be there and eventually be saved"?
That depends on how you view Scripture. The Eastern Orthodox view is vastly different from that of Western Christianity. But let's talk. What is unscriptural about God being love and acting according to that ontological truth? What is unscriptural about the idea of the refiner's fire?
Interesting idea; not Scriptural.
Of course it's scriptural. The refiner's fire. Do a word search.
Neither was creating hell, a concept which came from paganism and not Judaism. Note that the Jews in Christ's time had no concept of a burning, eternal hell in the next life. They spoke of the grave and the place of the dead, but not of the modern concept of hell. That entered Jewish thought in the first century.
Okay. I accept that this is Scripture. But if the second death is allowed to live forever, the state you refer to as hell (correct me if I am wrong) then doesn't that destroy the work of the Cross, which was to destroy death and make it non-existent? And how can Christ be "all in all" if in fact there is a great multitude of people for whom Christ is the enemy and they want nothing to do with?
Does verse 54 refer not to all mankind just because in verse 58 the brethren are addressed?
It says the dead in verse 52, clearly. No exceptions made.
Flat out ridiculous.
My quote is no more ridiculous than your out-of-context quote.
Do you understand the concept of in-context?
In 1 Cor 15 Paul starts off talking to and about the saints at Corinth not all mankind.
1 Corinthians 15:1-3
1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
1 Corinthians 15:14
14 And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.
2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
1 Corinthians 15:18-19
18 Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.
19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.
1 Corinthians 15:34
34 Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.
1 Corinthians 15:52-58
52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.
57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.
Paul does not start out talking to and about the saints at Corinth then suddenly slip in one verse vs. 54 about all mankind then suddenly switch back to only the saints at Corinth in vss. 57-58?
And how can Christ be "all in all" if in fact there is a great multitude of people for whom Christ is the enemy and they want nothing to do with?
Adam's death, the first death, was a UNIVERSAL, corporate judgement for a single sin. The plants, the animals, all human beings, the ground... the very matter of the universe itself was affected. Even the people who never ate of the fruit that Adam ate experienced that judgement of death.
Rom 5:12-14 NASB 12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned-- 13 for until the Law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the offense of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.
The second death is an INDIVIDUAL judgement. The first death was just and true because all people sin. The Law came so that there would be a measure whereby someone could be declared righteous. Without The Law, there was no way to measure sin. It took someone coming to earth and living a perfect, sinless life to make that first judgment (death) unjust. That necessitates a repeal of the first judgment (death), in lieu of individual judgments.
[1Co 15:21-22, 26 NASB] 21 For since by a man [came] death, by a man also [came] the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive. ... 26 The last enemy that will be abolished is death.
[2Ti 1:10 NASB] 10 but now has been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,
Adam's universal judgment was death. Because of Christ's appearing (not his death on the cross), Adam's death judgment must be repealed. We are not redeemed by Christ from the first judgement, but from the second. There was no need to redeem us from the first, because it is repealed or abolished. But the gift of grace doesn't cover that one sin of Adam, it covers many sins. In other words, Christ's redemption doesn't cover Adam's one universal sin, it covers each of on an individual basis... this is why each of us must qualify for forgiveness individually.
[Rom 5:16 NASB] 16 The gift is not like [that which came] through the one who sinned; for on the one hand the judgment [arose] from one [transgression] resulting in condemnation, but on the other hand the free gift [arose] from many transgressions resulting in justification.
Rev 20:11-15 NASB 11 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is [the book] of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one [of them] according to their deeds. 14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15 And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
The second death, unlike Adam's first universal death, is an individual judgement. There is no escape for those who are individually judged with the second death.
Correct their torment in the lake of fire is eternal with the devil and his angels just as the state of bliss is eternal for the believer in heaven(new heavens & earth) with Christ.
Thanks for reading, I hope you enjoyed. :)
I do not have the time nor the inclination to read through and address all 36 of these verses. At one time or another I have addressed most if not all of them.
If you will pick five verses which you think are the strongest, best support of universal reconciliation I will be glad to address them.
Here is the last one. Context, context, context. A text without a context is a pretext.
Acts of the apostles 3:21-23
21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.
22 For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you.
23 And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people.
When Paul wrote vs. 23 did he forget what he wrote in vs. 21? Vs. 23 does say "restitution of all things" but after saying that Paul adds a condition "every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people." Do we just ignore vs. 23? Does Paul mean what he says or not?
