How do you know....

The question arises in different forms, but a member asked "how do you know you are one of the elect"?

How do you answer such a question?

Here is my answer as a gentile:

I believe the promise of God of eternal life is God's provision.
My belief points to my my eternal life to which I was appointed.
My appointment by God (to eternal life) directly results in my believing.


Act 13:47 For so the Lord has commanded us, saying, “‘I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’” And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord, and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed.

Both are very good answers if the question was, are you Saved, but the question was about your being one of the Elect, is it your contention that anybody who is Saved, Born Again, a Christian is automatically one of the Elect?

Great question...

Election is not the result... but the cause, we are born again, and Saved because of election not the other way.

By the will of the Father

They were appointed (cause) to eternal life so they believed (effect). You can not separate eternal life from the (dependency) of believing in Him..coming to Him.

The belief is granted for the sake of Christ... not for ours.

For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake, engaged in the same conflict that you saw I had and now hear that I still have.

Jesus says we have eternal life. Eternal life has no beginning or end but is eternal in God's mind and therefore unchangeable.

I believe there are detailed answers that one can give but it really comes down to 1 John 3:14
